Computer is running Win2000 pro. Everytime I reboot the BOINC manager window pops up and remains on screen for over a minute until it finally loads. If I click on the window the message "the program is not responding" comes up and I have the option of ending it or not. Any idea why it freezes up like this and takes time to load the client? I have reverted back to the UD software because this is on a friend's computer and it's annoying having to wait for the frozen window to finally minimize and the program to run.
----------------------------------------Thanks. |

Please note: this is a guess, I don't have enough data for a firm opinion.
It looks very much like your friend's computer is choked up with so much spyware and miscellaneous junk that it is taking too long to boot. As a quick test, see how many processes are running in Task Manager, and how many icons are shown in the notification area (by the clock). Also, tell us the system specs. The computer may simply be overloaded (but my money's on spyware). |

Didactylos,
----------------------------------------Thanks for the quick reply. No spyware to speak of on that machine. And very little junk. The computer recently had a clean install (by me). I make sure the computer is up to date and regularly scanned/protected from spyware. It boots fine and fast when BOINC is not installed. Only when I try to run that program does it choke up. Only other progs that load at startup are the antivirus, sound manager, and logitech i-touch. Specs are: Win 2000pro athlon 64 3000+ 512Mb RAM 80 gig HD |

There have been reported problems with some anti virus packages. Which are you using?
Off the top of my head, I think McAfee's real time protection causes slowing problems. |

At first I was using AVG free edition and I suspected that may be at fault as well. Uninstalled it, reinstalled BOINC, same problem.

----------------------------------------How does your friend have his swap file set up? Perhaps it's initial allocation is too small and you are waiting on several swap file expansions during the system boot. The expansions could also be taking a long time if the drive where the swap file is defined is quite fragmented. It is a bit difficult to speculate on what the problem might be with so little information, but with what you have said, I think real and virtual memory constraints would be a good place to look, particularly if it eventually will complete the startup. lewis,
----------------------------------------Not sure how the swap file is set. I'll have a look. He has an 80 gig hard drive that is not fragmented and only has a few gigs filled up. This is a pretty new build and is running smooth except with BOINC. |

----------------------------------------Keep us in the loop on this. If you get a chance to watch it boot, you might want to watch the process on Task Manager to see if some process is taking up a lot of resource at the time. Anything you might see could be significant. Good luck. As an afterthought, you might try removing the BOINC manager from the startup and see if it will initialize more quickly later when nothing else is starting. The swap file is set at a mininum size of 768Mb and a maximum of 1500+Mb.

Hmmm ... that's just about what I have set on the system I am at right now: 512Mb Real with my swap set for 720-1440 Mb. Of course, the appropriate size would depend on the requirements of the program mix running on the system, but that certainly should be sufficient in most instances.
Does anyone else out there have any thoughts on this? |
