sad Request to increase frequency of project saves to disk

Not knowing anything about the functionality of this software, I posted this thread on the UD Windows client forum and now I wish to post it here because the problem is apparently part of the science application:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=6294

The problem, as stated in the above thread, is that I am losing work that should have been saved to disk when it is closed down, so that the project comes back to roughly the same point when the project is restarted. I think the best time to save data is when the project is put into sleep mode. I use sleep mode, for example, to ensure a clean shutdown of the project when I an shutting down Windows - a minimalist approach not knowing anything about the software.

When I restart WCG I invariably get back the percentage completion I started out with in the previous session (unless I have a long run at it) and this is counterproductive. I don't think it has anything to do with how the completion percentage is computed, either.

I like the WCG graphic and for reasons that have nothing to do with the projects per se, I sometimes run both BOINC and WCG at the same time, so I don't think I want to run Autodock anymore until it is fixed (if that's where the problem is). Apparently Rosetta does not have this problem. If it sounds like I'm talking out of my hat, I am. But I still have the problem.

Your question was answered in the other thread.

I'm afraid (for now) there is no better answer.

Try leaving your computer on 24/7. You will get a whole lot more crunching done!

The average only works for that workunit. I have an AMD64 2.4GHz that crunches about as fast as your machine. The checkpoint times will be all over the place. They tend to be at about the same time within each workunit, by verifying a UDMonitor log. Another workunit might be every 4 minutes. A third workunit could take a checkpoint every hour. I saw one last week that only had one intermediate checkpoint at 50% execution....after 90 minutes. These very long checkpoint times could waste a lot of time on a slow machine if it is turned off and rebooted at a random time.

Re: Request to increase frequency of project saves to disk

I found a partial workaround. Most of the time I try to use my Hibernate function, so I stopped closing WCG after sleep mode and it doesn't lose any work.

Thanks to all for all the info.
