FAAH - AMD X2 3800+ v.s. Intel P4 930 Dual Core

All -

I'm working on a Small Cluster / Farm configuration for a team member to run FAAH exclusively on. I havent' seen any benchmarks for the two processors above < or similar >. In fact, i've not seen any benchmarks for default systems, not to say there aren't any, just can't find them if they exist. I'm not sure which processor to opt for. The Mini-Cluster will run the following ~:

8 - Nodes of the following:
FAAH Client: BOINC < gcc 03 / 04 Optimized / Custom Compiled >
O/S - Gentoo Linux
HDD - Mini-Disk Installation < 256MB - 512MB > per node.
RAM - 1GB of somthing Zippy, OZC, GSkill etc etc < CPU dependent of course >.
CPU - Well that's the question of the day.

Any recommendations for best performance on FAAH ???

Only the BOINC client will utilize both X2 cores simultaneously. The standard UD interface will not. FightAids@Home will run either way, but BOINC does the best on your X2. Other than that, AMD systems have the best floating point unit for the crunching here. The fastest AMD computer you can stand will naturally work the best here. My single core AMD64 4000+ and AMD64 3400+ are both 2.4GHz, and equivalent to a Pentium IV/3.2GHz for crunching. Each one of those turns in 5-6 FA@H workunits per day.

There are some processor score benchmarks here, but they may be old. Processor score may be lower than usual if something else was running when the test was done.

Hi retsof -

Thanks for the input. I was leaning toward the X2 as well. Now if I could only put enough $$ together for 8x FX-60's I'd be a happy bunny. !!

I'd have to concur being that an AMD X2 dual core would be the most bang for the buck in processing power available for these projects. I am running two projects simultaneously full time on an AMD X2 4400 with liquid cooling and very happy with it. Performance is great running all this and Doom 3 plus other programs at the same time.

The X2 4400 processors can now be had online for low as $450 each which is a good price for the performance.

ASUS AI NOS Board
ANTEC True Power
AMD X2 4400
Coolmaster CPU cooler
2 Gigs Corsair XMS RAM
ATI X800
74 GIG WD SATA Raptor
Win XP Pro w/sp2
