Before I came here I was a member of BOINC working on climate prediction - some may think it a little late, but it's still worth doing. The problem I had was that the work units were gigantic - I did read that the idea was that the average PC would take a year to do one model cycle. The other problem was that BOINC did not work for long enough to find out whether or not it was working, and I constantly found that after two or three days of working on a unit I would be told that the client had had a problem. So I abandoned BOINC and came here, where I have had no problems at all, and done work with a more direct value.
The BBC is now giving a lot of publicity to the chance to work on Climate Prediction, so I looked into it and found that it is still using BOINC. Before I try to write to the CP people to suggest that they join WCG, can somebody tell me if they are already in discussions with WCG? Robert |

I don't know if they are in discussion with WCG advisory board, but you can always pass this on to them:

World Community Grid now runs from two separate platforms: (1) We run the United Devices windows client and (2) we run the BOINC Linux and Windows client (and looking to add mac soon). Anyway, we are very familiar with BOINC. For more info on this go to the Join Now page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewJoinNow.do
As far as Climate Prediction running on World Community Grid... we can do that. It seems to pass our basic rules as it's: Not-for-profit, benefits humanity, and results are made available to the public domain. For more information on this, go to the Submit Research page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewSubmitAProposal.do As you know, once a project is approved, the World Community Grid team does all the work of boarding and managing the project. And best of all, it's all free for the research organization. Speaking of free....... feel free to contact the CP people about World Community Grid. And thanks for this line of thought. |

Hi Robert,
I'm recently aware that the BBC are running a large Climate Prediction project using grid technology and have alerted the global WCG team. We approached the BBC last year about supporting WCG, but got no response. However I am seeing their corp responsibility Manager next week at another event so I hope to raise the issue then. they're not going to abandon their project now so I think the best we can hope for is that the end of their project they will promote WCG as a way of continuing for those who have signed up to the CP project! |
