Couldn't resolve hostname [§|] Error

Morning All

One of my PCs (using BOINC) is having a problem returning the completed work unit ek076_01_0_0 and is erroring with the message
Couldn't resolve hostname [§|]
A subsequent unit has completed and been returned with no problem.

Is there something that I can modify to allow the unit to be returned or should I just delete it ?

Thanks

Re: Couldn't resolve hostname [§|] Error

If your able to attach the BOINC manager to that machine, you should be able to go into transfers tab and attempt to submit again. When you say "a subsequent unit has completed and been returned with no problem" I assume that means after this current hostname issue.

If this does not work, please post the logs and what version of boinc your using on what system.

Hi uplinger

Correct. The unit in question is trying to upload itself every couple of hours or so, whilst other units are being downloaded, crunched and returned with no problem.

I have just manually tried to send the failing one again.

Here are the message entries

Re: Couldn't resolve hostname [§|] Error

The Lazy Slug,

Can you copy and paste the information from --get_state?

if you're using windows, open up command prompt and go to the folder boinc was installed in (usually c:\program files\BOINC) and execute "boinccmd.exe --get_state" while the agent is running

if using linux, open up a terminal and go to your boinc installed directory (usually ~/BOINC) and execute "./boinc_cmd --get_state" while the agent is running.

you should get something like this...

======== Results ========
1) -----------
name: faah0176_diversity0467_x6364_01_3

find the workunit in question and paste that information.

Thanks,

Re: Couldn't resolve hostname [§|] Error

It appears that in the client_state.xml file and client_state_prev.xml there was a corrupt URL field for that workunit. What I would recommend you doing is shut down boinc, this is so we're not changing something in the middle of BOINC writing something. You will need to do this however your system is setup.

Then, you'll want to open up client_state.xml file using a text editor.
Search for "<name>ek076_01_0_0</name>". A few lines under this, you'll see a <url> </url> field with some bogus characters. Change this to look like this...
<url>https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/w...pload_handler</url>

Now you will need to open up client_state_prev.xml file using a text editor. Search for "<name>ek076_01_0_0</name>". A few lines under this, you'll see a <url> </url> field with some bogus characters. Change this to look like this...
<url>https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/w...pload_handler</url>

Once this is done restart BOINC and update the World Community Grid. I
assume that you are using the gui for this client, if not I can give you
command line help on how todo this.

Again, thank you for your patience and assistance in solving this bug.

NOTE: These instructions are meant for this particular workunit but may be used if someone has a similar problem on another workunit just change the value between <name></name>

Re: Couldn't resolve hostname [§|] Error

Just to confirm, these instructions did fix the problem and the unit uploaded correctly.

Re: Couldn't resolve hostname [§|] Error

Yesterday I changed two computers from UD to Boinc. Now I experiences the same problem as Lazy Slug on one of the machines. But the solution provided by Uplinger doesn't seem to be the right for my problem.

Plz help!
