Re: Grid slows computer

Chuck --

Do you run any kind of spyware removal program regularly? If not, several are mentioned in the.

I run many Spyware removal programs frequently and they are always up to date when run.

Re: Grid slows computer

it does sound like some of the 'continuous' anti-virus stuff i saw before. i think it's ok to turn off the 24 hr/day part of it. or as said above, switch to AVG or AVASTI.

I have searched the old threads on how to deal with mcaffee. The threads do not give directions on how to do what they suggest. My mcaffee is from AOL, so it might be a little different.

Re: Grid slows computer

OPEN THE TASK MANAGER AND STOP THE PROCESS NAMED 'MCSHIELD.EXE'.

That might be a little tight if running Win XP. Perhaps you are also using motherboard graphics, which takes part of the system memory. A separate graphics card would restore that. Most current ones are either AGP or PCI-Express, depending on the motherboard.

Re: Grid slows computer

retsof i saw the exact problem before with AOL users and McAfee Antivirus.

if the continuous "on-access" virus-scanning done by the McAfee process called 'mcshield.exe' is not stopped, the process will jump up to 27%+ CPU usage while WCG is running, and everything will slow down very noticeably.

either he can just let McAfee scan for viruses every 24 hours instead of constantly on access, or he can change antivirus programs.

Re: Grid slows computer

I was just trying to come up with some other ideas.

I know what you are saying about the continuous McAfee scan. I had it on a Pentium IV/2.8 at work. It turned it into a Pentium IV/1.4. tongue

If the continuous scanning is turned off, a mechanism for scanning incoming e-mail should probably remain.

Thank you to everyone who has provided suggestions and help wth my problem. I think that it is a problem with Mcafee. I do not feel comfortable turning off the constant scanning function. Despite being very careful about viruses, there have been several instances when the constant scan has caught an incoming virus. I will continue using Grid as a Screensaver only. At least I know what the problem is now, and perhaps Mcafee and or Grid will come up with a solution in the future.

Re: Grid slows computer

i have advised mcafee email support about the problem as follows:

Dear Sirs:

Do you have someone who fixes your programs, to answer this small problem?

We are members of World Community Grid, a distributed computing project with thousands of world-wide users.

Here is our site, backed by United Devices and IBM:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

The computers download a small work unit, and whatever CPU energy is not being used for something else goes to work on the problem (up to 100% CPU usage).

However, your process called McShield.exe (seems to be 'on-access scanning'?) gets highly activated while our problems are being computed. I just do not see any reason for this because the whole work unit was already downloaded.

The net result is that McShield.exe jumps up to 27% CPU usage and everything slows down very noticeably. This discourages people from helping our project!

Can you please get back to me about this mystery? As stated above, nothing is being downloaded or uploaded while the work is being done!

Thank you.
