I'm relatively new to Grid processing and think it's a phantastic idea.
However, I experience that after a short while of processing (at 100% CPU) my Thinkpad T30 turns 'red hot' (i.e. it turns so hot that I burn my fingers when touching it near the processor) in a way I fear it may break or stop working (my other/normal job tasks) and need fixing. Therfore every now and then I put it to snooze for a while to cool down - sub-optimal usage. Q: I've not seen a parameter to limit CPU utilization. Is there any way to limit the amount of processor usage, say, to 50%? Regards,q Markus Markus Wernli |

Yes, laptops don't take kindly to being thrashed.

----------------------------------------I looked there and didn't find the instructions on how to throttle the processor there. I may have not looked the right place for it, but in any event, there are instructions here on how to use the World Community Grid CPU Throttle Feature. The posting was written by the World Community Grid tech that developed it. In his discussion, he indicates that many laptop computers have CPU speed setting capabilities which can be more effective in controlling the temperature. There are several techniques for improving cooling ... elevate computer by sitting it on a cooling pad, or even a metal grid pie rack as at least one owner has done. Some have opened any drawers that can open (like a CD tray) to increase airflow.
----------------------------------------Caution is still advised with this one, since we already know it runs hot. If airflow cannot be improved, throttling it down would be the best technique.

It should be noted that the throttling feature is currently ONLY in the UD agent applications. The BOINC versions of the applications do not have this feature.
