Moving the agent from C: to D: without loosing the current work unit

Hi.

I've installed the agent on C:, but I'd like to move it to D: instead.

Can I just move the "WorldCommunityGrid" directory from C: to D: and modify the corresponding registry entries?

Or should I uninstall first, then move the directory and re-install the agent?

Suggestions would be appreciated. :-)

Re: Moving the agent from C: to D: without loosing the current work unit

if you want to complete the current work unit and not download another so you can move the WCG agent without throwing away progress, set your profile to use disk storage of 10 MB. When you complete the current wok unit, it will fail to download another. You can then deinstall, reset your disk storage value to whatever it is right now ( so you can download work units again) and reinstall into the other drive. It will force you to create a new "device" and you won't be able to use or delete the old device, but you'd be on the other drive and wouldn't be tossing current progress.

You could probably also move the directory to the other disk, but I don't know what shortcuts and registry values you'd have to modify to point to the new drive.

Re: Moving the agent from C: to D: without loosing the current work unit

Thanks for the tip.

However, I did attempt to move the directory from C: to D: (after returning the last result!) and going through the registry and it seems to have worked. At least the client started up nicely and continued working on the recently downloaded work unit.

What I did was

1. Stop the client
2. Move the WorldCommunityGrid directory from "C:\Program Files" to "D:\Program" (I don't care very much for long file names)
3. Start Regedit and search the entire registry for "WorldCommunityGrid" and change all instances of "C:\Program Files\WorldCommunityGrid" to "D:\Program\WorldCommunityGrid"
4. Modify the shortcuts so they also points to D:

After this I simply re-started the client and away it went.

Re: Moving the agent from C: to D: without loosing the current work unit

Well, it turns out that my conclusions were a bit hasted.

The client runs, but it doesn't seem to process the work unit. It also re-starts the processing on the work unit if I re-start the agent.

So the conclusion is to follow your recommendation and NOT try to move the client. :-)

Un-install and re-install the agent went without problems and it runs as it should.

But it would be nice to be able to "resume" the old device instead of having to create a new one.

Re: Moving the agent from C: to D: without loosing the current work unit

looking at the files in my WCG directory, there is one named ud_21376.GID, and looking at that file in a hex editor, I see the full path to my WCG agent in there. I don;t know if there are other files that also contain the path, the files are all binary - not readable by this human anyway

that file appears to get updated, maybe it is the progress recovery file? Anyway, if it's got the path buried in there, then changing the path (or drive) might confuse it. Too bad, it would be nice to be able to move/reinstall the agent without having to spawn another WCG "device".
