I switched my laptop to the BOINC program on Sunday 26th Feb after reading all about it in our thread over the last several weeks. Shout out to keithhenry
![]() I assume the BOINC forum is being transferred over to the new MOT Forum page by spikey_richie this week. I assume the default settings are fine to leave and not tamper with - I had a look around on Wiki. The one I might alter now and again is how often my laptop connects to the server and therefore, how much work is sent out because sometimes my laptop is away from my wireless router on my travels! According to keithhenry it's all good with BOINC. His daily points on BOINC STATS from one centrino laptop were far greater than mine running the UD agent (even factoring the MHz difference) - which is good for me and good for our fab Team ![]() According to Graham it takes a while for things to even out - validation etc. so looking forward to reporting back next week with more points for the team. |

WARDSTAR --
Welcome to the BOINC world. I have my main system on it and love it (left the other so I can use it for answers to UD problems in the forums). I helped Spikey and Graham setting up the new forum last night and we got all of KeithHenry's wisdom moved over ![]() |

Just not fun anymore. Too much crud here. I'll try elsewhere and see how I do. Take care. |

Sorry to see you go. We will miss you (especially me since I attended Earlham for a year). Best of luck to you. |

Yes, you may want to tweak the "Connect to network about every X days" setting in your WCG device profile(s). Presuming that you crunch 24/7, the objective is to always have enough work available on your laptop so that you're always able to crunch - no downtime. You want to balance that with having too much work so that you're crunching on an old WU and impacting the time it takes to get a quorum on that WU. That doesn't mean that you want to set this to three days if you typically are away from your "home" router for three days at a time. You want to base this on how long you will typically be going without access to the net. So many places these days have net access available that even though you may be traveling, there will be opportunities to connect to the net. You also want to try to avoid major changes to this value. If you go from 0.1 to 5, you will get enough WU's downloaded at pretty much the same time. That is, those WU's won't be spread out over time. Also, this all presumes that you travel on a pretty regular basis. If it's more erratic with long periods between trips, this may not be the ideal approach for you. Keep in mind that you can always go to the Work tab and suspend each WU listed there, then go to the Projects tab and click on Update. That will result in a new WU being downloaded. You will want to swicth back to the Work tab and resume your current WU first and then any other WUs while the new WU is downloading. Otherwise, the new WU will start processing after it downloads. |
