Preserve Boinc stats over system reinstall

Hello again. Is it possible to preserve the Boinc stats for a system across a full system reinstall? For UD, it was so easy to copy the Program Files directory to the reinstalled system. Can this be done for Boinc? As always, thanks again.

Re: Preserve Boinc stats over system reinstall

Hi rutgers-nieer-cgilbert

I've just run a couple of tests on this and it appears that you can do the same with the BOINC client. (ie processing continues where it left off and the device does not get re-registered with WCG)

However, if you are running BOINC as a service you'll have to export the registry key (and it's subkeys)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BOINC
(You'll have to do a restart so the service is recognised)

Re: Preserve Boinc stats over system reinstall

Excelent, thanks so much. I installed as a service on a few machines for no reason, so thanks for that tip too.

I wonder if I can convert my two Single User installs to Service installs.

Re: Preserve Boinc stats over system reinstall

The easiest way would be to uninstall BOINC using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and then reinstall as a service - the processed data, xml files, etc are left untouched during an uninstall.

Rename Windows Boinc device??

This rename trick worked great. AND it seemed to rename my Boinc device. The WCG online device manager now shows this reinstalled machine with it's new hostname.

But that's odd, why does Boinc simply use the machine's host name as the device name? All of my machines begin their life with the same hostname which I change upon deployment. I wonder if the Boinc device will rename with it... and if so, why did the myth of "unchangable Boinc names" linger for so long?
