Re: THIS ... is how teams are supposed to be competing

... snip ... I got 11 new members today :-D

11??? uhh ... uhhhh .... you can't join our contest; you missed the filing deadline! Come back next year. biggrin
Do you want me to dig out and repost my advice on growing a team by recruiting from outside WCG? Sage advice, I think. But the thanks go to Illiad, who is doing amazing things to promote Team UF.

I already do all of my recruiting from outside WCG; been touting that as the only legitimate recruitment activity. 'Course, I've been wrongly accused of trying to recruit within WCG, but what am I supposed to do? Just never post here?

Now, if you want to join the hot contest that BitBenderTech and the HomeBrewers are going to have, visit our thread in the Chat Room. Because your team now has 177 members and HomeBrewers has only 33 -- much less than 1/5 your size, at the very LEAST, you should proportiately recruit 5 times as many as HomeBrewers or BitBender. Are you up to the challenge? Then BRING IT ON!!!

Yeah! Bring it on indeed.

I know you recruit externally; my post was all about how to capitalise on that.

Now, I know Illiad is planning things, and he's given me another months top-billing on the UserFriendly home page, so despite the ridiculousness of your handicap, I say game on!

Of course, if you really think we're too mismatched, I will be happy to back out.

Okay. I'll bite. I'm always open to suggestions, and I certainly realize that I don't know everything. So, let me know where to find info on how to recruit externally.

As for whether the handicap is ridiculous or not, your team is five times the size of homebrewers. I also strongly suspect that there is an explanation for how you got to be such a big team despite being about the same age as HomeBrewers. I figure you were probably a group that transferred in mass from another site, or most of you have some affiliation of some sort. You probably have a network of some sort for your members, such as a web-site and maybe your own forums. HomeBrewers, on the other hand, was formed with a single member -- me. Other than my team thread at WCG, our members have no contact with one another. Well, you can look back through our threads, and I think you'll find, IIRC, that there has been only a single post by only one other acknowledged member of HomeBrewers. So while I hope that the other members of my team are trying to recruit, I don't know for certain that that is the case, and I have no way to encourage them to make a concerted effort for our race during the month of February. Now, if you think a handicap in direct proportion to our sizes isn't fair, let me know what you think is. You're already beating us, but I'll take still you on at a 'four times' handicap. BitBender is in this race, too, so they ought to have a say in this, too.

Just post what you think is a reasonable handicap for your team, we'll all try out best and see how it comes out.

Cheers.

Re: THIS ... is how teams are supposed to be competing

I dug it out for you. Mostly waffle, but it covers some important points. It also describes my recruiting ground.

Watch out for BitBender, though! Despite being a similar age, they have a far higher score than either of us. I can only assume they came out of the gate with the number of members they have now, since their average overall is the same as their average now. Also, they have the same recruiting advantage I do, since they have their own forum/community. But maybe they've exhausted the possibilities there?

A fair handicap should be proportional to our normal growth, but that's hard to measure. I'll go with your original estimate, but reserve the right to give you grief over it :-p

I don't know what happened to your banner - you've removed it now. Maybe you were (inadvertently) stealing bandwidth, and someone decided to prevent it?

You may have pretty pictures, but we've got Dust Puppy! Can you look at that innocent face and not feel you have to make the world a perfect place?

If its the same banner as everyone else as far as I know that was the only way to use it. It ran some kind of script that gathered you stats.

Re: THIS ... is how teams are supposed to be competing

It's to do with deep linking. Some people consider deep linking is stealing. And sometimes it is, like when you deep link to something hosted by someone else (most likely not your intellectual property) and steal their bandwidth (and/or ad revenue) for your purposes.

In other cases, like these stats things, the hosting is provided free, and there should be no restriction on deep linking. However, sometimes web space provided for home pages and similar have a deep linking restriction to prevent it being used for other purposes.

It was one that was generated for me with a script linked in one of the threads on WCG. It used to have my stats and my team's stats, but now it is the same banner as several other people have, which is ...

Yes, that's correct. It was a dynamic banner, and if I would have copied it to my site, it would have lost it's capability to update. The banner says external linking not permitted. Well, I'm sorry, but I got the distinct impression that folks here at WCG were invited , in one of the threads here, to partake. I know that linking to graphics on other websites steals bandwidth, which is why I usually copy everything I'm going to use to my own site and link to it there.

By the way ... HomeBrewers just signed up 2 more, for a total of 4. Unfortunately, UserFriendly has signed up 21, which, when adusted for their handicap (divided by 4) is 5.25. I may have been too hasty in giving in to all of the crying crying and pouting about 5 being unfair. That's alright; I'll just need to work harder, but I don't know if BBT is going to agree to a 4 instead of a 5. But at least HomeBrewers are not in last place. biggrin BitBenderTech -- the so-called 'SHARK' -- is being eaten alive. biggrin

Cheers,
