Morning All,
Around the end of November last year, I moved all of my PCs and servers over to the BOINC client. Didn't have any problems, plus its nice to be able to deploy the agents now. Anyway, since then, one of my old UD agents still pops up in my Device Stats as having returned results. (The last time being 3 days ago.) The server in question has no trace of the UD agent on it at all. I am aware that BOINC work units are delayed before they are credited to a device, but I didn't think this was the case with the UD agent. I'm just looking to check to see if there maybe something wrong or whether this is a normal sort of scenario. Many Thanks |

Hi Slug,
There is nothing normal about this. Sporadic results? Do you have a laptop that is only occasionally connected to the Internet? Just trying to think of a cause - mycrofth |

No, its a Server (Windows 2003 SBS Server with SP1).
----------------------------------------Its on 24/7 with an attached UPS, which also powers the ADSL Modem. As far as I'm aware, I haven't had any broadband outages either. I have had to do a 'bare metal' restore a week ago, but the backup tape was from 24 hours earlier. Is there anyother infomation I can give you? EDIT: Another result has just appeared after the 6pm update [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 19, 2006 8:08:00 PM] |

Hi Slug,
Well, if you are sure that UD.exe is not on the server, then I suppose the thing to concentrate on is the identification in your device statistics. Is there any possibility of identical names causing confusion? (The server is actually using unique installation numbers, but shows assigned names for human convenience. Some of these assigned names might be duplicates.) If you are running N computers on BOINC, I assume that you have N old devices that used to run UD and N devices now running BOINC, and a total of N+1 devices showing as having returned results in the last 14 days (or whichever time you have selected using the drop down menu). mycrofth |

As you're probably aware, you can't change the BOINC device name, so there are definately duplicates there.
When I was using the UD Agent, if a client was installed, the previous device name was always change to 'Retired - COMPUTERNAME' I have checked the device numbers from the hyperlinks (ie http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...d=******&deviceType=B) but haven't found any duplicates. Infact, it appears that WCG started numbering again from 1 (or there about) for the BOINC client. I'm obviously confused as ALL of my PCs are now deviceType=B rather than deviceType=U (I have been checking this out for sometime before I first started this thread) For what it's worth, I have 14 active clients - my stats are showing 105 installations. (Replaced PCs, crashed disks, number of failed attempts to deploy the UD agent....) And, no I didn't get rid of one of the PCs that was the name of this mysterious agent! In total all of my stats will come at the moment from 3 IP Addresses. Do you think that the tech guys would have info regarding which address results come from. (Really clutching at straws here, but I wondering if a separated PC is adding to my stats.) |

Hi Slug,
Two points I want to check: one of my old UD agents still pops up in my Device Stats as having returned results. (The last time being 3 days ago.) I'm obviously confused as ALL of my PCs are now deviceType=B rather than deviceType=U Yes, now that all your computers are running BOINC, all your active devices should be deviceType=B. A device is not really a computer, a device is a particular installation on a computer. The same computer might go through many different devices (installations) during its career. What distinguishes one device from another is the device ID established during installation. A complete copy of the WCG directory from one computer to another will seem to work for the UD devices, but will soon cause the server to mark both computers as unreliable since they will soon be tripping over each other as they try to download work units and upload results in a way that will make no sense to the server, which thinks that they are one and the same. But your initial query indicated that several days ago an old device that was deviceType=U returned a result. There may be a point of confusion here. Do you have 14 computers but 15 devices showing recently returned results? mycrofth |

Morning mycrofth
I feel pretty sure I understand the registration of a computer with the WCG servers. My 'confusion' is that I don't have any Type U devices active anymore. Sorry to confuse you The slight querk I had was that my two servers are identical. Both used to run the UD agent. When updating the offsite one with hard disks from the onsite one, I would re-register the offsite one before it started crunching otherwise both would be marked as unreliable. Now that I am using the BOINC agent, I have found that the load on the onsite on has become too great, so BOINC only runs on the offsite one now. Neither have any trace of the UD agent on them. I'm getting paranoid that I've missed an UD agent installation on either of the server, so I have just searched for any UD files/folders/registry entries/processes again. Apart from 1 old screensaver registry entry pointing to a UD.EXE that doesn't exist, there is nothing. All PCs have been recently reformatted and reinstalled as well. Do you have 14 computers but 15 devices showing recently returned results? That is exactly the problem. All 14 of the installed BOINC clients are returning work units. But the 15th UD one is also returning them too. I'm not sure there is much more I can do at my end to rectify this problem. |

You have made everything crystal clear, beyond any chance of misunderstanding. The next step is to send a 'Contact Us' report identifying the UD device. This will allow the staff to see what is being downloaded and uploaded. Perhaps this additional information will provide a hint. Please include a reference tto this thread. This one is a puzzle! mycrofth |

The next step is to send a 'Contact Us' report identifying the UD device. Hi mycrofth. I sent a 'Contact Us' report after my last post, but haven't had a reply. I know the tech guys have probably been very busy launching FAAD on BOINC, but I've just had another device (ie a device with a different ID number) return a result ! Just a little concerned, that's all... Regards Slug |
