If I may reopen an old discussion...
From my researches, it appears that images were allowed in the past, but the feature was removed because of the potential for abuse. Since the developers will be revisiting the stats soon, I wondered whether this issue could be rethought. I have a few ideas, together with some thoughts on existing ideas. We can:
To provide a little perspective: all sorts of images can be posted on the forums. If the community can police these thousands of posts, why not a few static images? Also, other grid projects allow images, and I have never heard of any exceptional abuse. And finally: I want an image for my team, so no bias here... Anyway: I open the floor to debate. |

There are 8,999 teams at the moment. That is at least as many teams to keep track of as the "thousands of posts".
----------------------------------------Some may be inactive in the past year and can be ignored. If this debate drags out a few weeks, the team below should be in the top 100 and can satisfy the debate point of being able to keep its image. Top 100 for what? Run time, points or results?

Top 100 for what? Run time, points or results? Points are designed to be a fair yardstick for competition. Run time favours slower computers doing less crunching, and results favours teams concentrating on projects with smaller work units. (Actually, both projects seem to have the same average work unit size, but individual work units vary enormously). Even with 9000+ teams, not all will bother to add an image, and it will be a gradual process anyway as the feature is noticed. With new teams, there are only a few every day. Using a "report abuse" link, instead of checking each image individually, it would be as easy to police as the existing system for team names. |

Another (minor) point: some of the existing team images are broken. I'm guessing that the team captains can no longer modify the URL.
A solution to this (and future potential defacing problems) would be to have the images uploaded onto the WCG server, where they couldn't be arbitrarily changed, defaced or broken. |

Come on, team captains and other interested parties! Make your voice heard! Our WCG team page is the best place for us to link to, for recruitment purposes, and it would be nice to have the option of a nice clear logo at the top.
We had images once, so we know it's not difficult to implement. All it will take is a little "report abuse" link, and we're rolling. After all, there isn't currently any visible monitoring of team names and descriptions. Looks like a double standard to me, and I'm forced to wonder what could have led to the images being withdrawn. Please? |

I have no objections to team images/logos as long as all teams can do it.
However, apart from being very pretty, I'm not sure really what overall benefit it would be. I also wouldn't like to see teams competing for the 'best' image prize - I would rather we just competed by crunching.... Ady ![]() |

Just to clarify: my preference is for team images for all. I just offered the other suggestions in order to combat some of the counter-arguments that I have seen.
Does anyone official have anything more to say on the subject? |

We shut down adding team images when several porn sites started teams and had very explicit graphics. We try to be kid-friendly so shutting that down was the best alternative. Anyone who had an image on their team page at that time was allowed to keep them there.
Please remember that the World Community Grid support team is very small and has limited resources. Still, we get a lot of stuff done with our small team. Our main goal is to find and add research projects to World Community Grid. After all, that's what World Community Grid is all about. As 2006 unfolds, you'll be seeing the new research projects that we are currently working on. Our second goal is to increase members/devices so that more research can be run on World Community Grid. Toward that end we recruit partners, send out newsletters, that sort of thing. Our third goal is to make enhancements to the website to improve the experience for members. We try to limit the amount of "police" work that we have to do as it takes away from the important work mentioned above. Having said that, we're inclined to continue our policy of not allowing new teams to have an image on the team page. |

I'm looking forward to seeing those new projects. New projects means new members, and ultimately that's what keeps the crunching effort alive.
Clearly, the WCG shouldn't have to waste time policing. But that's what you have a community for. If the admins and CAs and the rest of the community here can police a whole forum, a few images should be no trouble at all. If you let the many suffer for the stupidity of a few, then those few have won. If you allow teams to be sorted by recently updated images, then I for one would be happy to check them. If you wanted a completely moderated system, you could set that up with a little more effort, and maybe give your Community Advisors the power to okay images. So, please: revisit your policy, and lean on the goodwill of the community you have built here. |

OK, we'll put this back on the to-do list. Give us a few weeks to work out how we want to manage it. Thanks.
