Is there any hope that any of this research would go towards helping people with ataxia? This a disease where proteins in the motor control areas of the brain run amok and cause the cells to atrophy.

The Protein Folding Project is a project that predicts via computer modeling the correct shape of human proteins that up to this time have not been extensively studied. This information will be compiled into a database and made available to anybody doing research on human proteins. In your situation, a scientist doing research in your area of interest could use this information in understanding the correct shape and/or role proteins play involved in it.
