Just wanted to point out that my tray icon disappeared after I came out of hibernation. This machine is corporate maintained and as such does not have SP2. UPnP is not enabled. So I found an exception to that vast array of fixes you posted the link to on the Start Here FAQ.
Any thoughts to adding a switch -reload_systray to the agent so it will simply re-request being added to the systray if it detects itself already running? |

----------------------------------------I am surprised that this late in the game that your maintenance does not include SP2. In any event, the documentation which I pointed to does indicate that the fixes are not 100% solutions to the problem which probably also explains user depriens comment that they did not work as well. The problem has been around for a long time and if you search the internet on "missing system tray icons" you will find hundreds of hits. It appears to be a bug in Windows XP that has not been acknowledged or addressed to date. I will pass your request along to the development team for their consideration but cannot promise that anything will be done or any time schedule should they decide to address it. The missing icon is due to an apparent race condition inside Windows XP. It appears that Windows tells applications that the notification area is ready before it really is. If the apps attempt to display its icon before the area is ready, the icon is never displayed.
----------------------------------------It appears that situations which cause the Windows Explorer (the desktop shell) to start slowly make the problem more apparent. Some of these situations are: * Rebooting after applying OS patches, new video drivers..anything which causes Windows to do some additional work upon startup. * Restarting from sleep or hibernation. The "icon not appearing" problem has always been an issue for UD. Those of you from grid.org know that this problem has always been around. Knowing this, I added code to every project to tell the UD application to reinsert its icon into the notification area. This solved almost all the issues of the icon not appearing, but if the Windows shell starts up very slowly, even this second message may be coming too fast. I can look into having the message sent periodically so that if it doesn't show up initially, it will eventually.

Out of curiosity, is there a way to remove the systray icon so it isn't visible? Looking to remove clutter in the systray for PC's used by multiple users?

Hopefully the 4.0.3.2 version that was released the other day should fix the missing systray icon. If any of you still have the problem after this update, please let us know. Just remember to mention if you had just done some Windows updates or other updates that required a reboot.
