Install of new agent has boxes but no text.

Apologies if this one has come up before, but I managed to install the new (BOINC?) agent completely blind, based on what the responses were to the original one, so I've only just come to this forum.

All of the message box responses in the install process, & in subsequent operation, have no text in them, just graphics & response boxes. Almost as if I had set my colours to white on white (which I haven't of course).

Help!

Re: Install of new agent has boxes but no text.

This sounds very similar to an issue that has been encountered with the installation of the UD agent on a system running Version 8.0 of McAfee VirusScan. One of the threads that discusses this can be found here. Please let us know if you are or if you are not running McAfee VirusScan 8.0. If you are not, we will pursue this further with you. If you are running it, it will let us know that the problem can happen on both agent platforms.

Yup, got it in one! I am running VirusScan 8.0.

If I can be of assistance in any other way to troubleshoot this, please let me know.

Regards,
Rodney.

confused Re: Install of new agent has boxes but no text.

Hello TurnerFiddaman,
It ought to be safe to install the program with just a firewall running. Once installed properly, the antivirus can be restarted.

I have never tried this with McAfee VirusScan 8.0. Are there any problems with this procedure?

Rodney --

The solution suggested by mycrofth is the easiest and one that we are confident will work for you. In a post over a year ago, a member who later became one of the Community Admins found another solution you may wish to try in a post over at Grid.org (the distributed computing project sponsored by United Devices, the developers of the UD agent that the World Community Grid also runs):

Well the McAfee overflow protection was the problem. Disabled it and it runs fine. I tried adding the processes and api files to the exclusion list in the overflow protection settings but it didn't help. So with it disabled UD is running fine. Thank you to everyone.

So this seems to be a work-around for the problem with McAfee VirusScan 8.0

Thank you for getting back to us to let us know that the same problem we had seen with the UD agent appears to also be present for BOINC users.

Best Regards,

Re: Install of new agent has boxes but no text.

Thank you both for the feedback. I'll use that process in future.

For the record, I was attempting to re-install because the normal operation start of the program was giving me an error combo box that I couldn't read either. So I can use this process if that ever happens again too.

I'm happy!

Regards,
Rodney.
