Hi chaps, thanks for your reply.
i thought it might be a firewall prob, but if it were so, i wouldn't be able to download a work unit untill i allowed the programs ports in winxp firewall. However, the program does download the unit. just not automatically. the icon only shows up when a unit has finished and i has no new unit to process. at all other times, the proog works as normal. Hope this helps! Cheers |

family raises an interesting possibility. Could you describe your software environment? (OS, firewall, antivirus, special internet connections, etc.)

First, the screen saver will show the logo instead of project graphics for several minutes while a work unit has ended, while a new one is being downloaded, and when the agent is first activated by screen saver mode.
Second, some machines are set up to shut down their internet connection (either via the windows support or via firewall function) after some period of inactivity. Perhaps this is happening while you are in screen saver mode. |

my os is win xp sp2
windows xp firewall avg virus protect (v non interfering) always on broadband adsl connection (so no disconnect) behind NAT First, the screen saver will show the logo instead of project graphics for several minutes while a work unit has ended, while a new one is being downloaded, and when the agent is first activated by screen saver mode. fair points, but it generally takes a max of two minutes to dload a new unit. i have left it running 10 mins & the logo does not change. plus, once i come out of screensaver mode, a new unit still does not dload, even when i'm not in 'run as screensaver all the time.' i think i will try and run in background & disable the screensaver from windows properties. be interesting to see what happens. thanks for your ideas guys. |

Having had a look at the SETI@home site (at least you can mention other DC Projects here )
----------------------------------------It isn't possible that you have another program such as a virus scanner programmed so that it only runs while your PC is idle such as it is when running the screensaver. This might hold off the download in these circumstances. I've just opened my drawer where I keep my big box of straws to clutch |

Windows Firewall is in the clear as is SP2 always on BB and NAT
----------------------------------------Just by adding World Community Grid as an exception it gets through in Screensaver Mode this seems to catch all WCG file names as OK. The times between sucessful test are a bit on the long side this issue is going to take some finding. It takes just over 2 mins to go from 1 WU to the next on a broadband connection. I need some inspiration. Have you checked the event logs for anything weird and wonderful at the times the WU's complete The problem with this fault is that you can't look under the hood while it's in screensaver mode |

This broadband of yours it's via an ADSL router I take it given the mention of NAT. It's not via a ADSL USB Modem is it?
----------------------------------------As you can see this one has me intrigued |

Hi there!
Sorry about the late reply since my last post, but I got tied up with work. Thankfully, I've managed to sort the problem out. I went onto the website and entered my device profile. When I was in there I changed it from run anytime on all days of the week, to run from 1AM --> 12AM, for every individual day. after it updated its settiings from the website, the screensaver automatically downloads a new unit when it has finished. Just wanted to thank all of you for your time and ideas. best regards fungal anomaly |

Nah I don't buy that - that must be a bug
----------------------------------------What you have done is set it to run for just 12 hours a day from 1 in the morning until 12 it will then stop all afternoon - it should work with the 24/7 settings mine is doing that at this end. The sceensaver shouldn't be any different to the manual operation and yet you said if you came out of screensaver mode it would upload It's got to be something else. Could you try resetting the values back to 24/7 and see if the fault has still gone away otherwise we've lost half of your PC's potential Dave |

hi!
What you have done is set it to run for just 12 hours a day from 1 in the morning until 12 it will then stop all afternoon - it should work with the 24/7 settings mine is doing that at this end. you are losing only 7 hours per week, as it is from 1 AM to 12 AM, so its not all that bad but, in the interests of science i'd be happy to turn it back to the 24 hour setting. be tommorow prob by the time i report back. cheers! |
