Job running excessive hours

I noticed on my currently running WCG Primary Task the task run time was excessive. Usually the tasks run about 8 to 12 hours. This task is currently at 95 hours. I had been stuck at about 14 % and decided to reboot the machine. That seems to have corrected the issue as the program now seems to be running normally. I am I was looking for a suggestion on where I should look for the bottleneck. I am running XP with sp 2. I did notice many performance concerns but other than leaving it run over the holiday's I had not been checking it till this AM. I did work yesterday with degraded performance. Suggestions appreciated.

Re: Job running excessive hours

Hi TPScheibner

This might just be normal behaviour of the agent. Each Work Unit is sized to run about 10 hours on your average PC however this is not an absolute science as the computation is what the developer Alther calls non-deterministic i.e haphazard or random. Some work units take longer than others - throughout the project every now and again we come across a batch of Monster Work Units that take that bit longer to crunch through then at other times 1 1/2 hours might be the norm. You have 2 weeks of run time to return a work unit to get credit for it or a total clock time of 3 weeks whichever comes first.

However... you may have a process that is hijacking all of your CPU's power. The agent only runs when your PC is just twiddling it's thumbs waiting for something to do and so it runs at the lowest priority. If your PC has anything else to do like read an email, play a PC game or compose a post like this one then that takes priority over crunching for the World Community Grid. If you right click on the toolbar and select Task Manager and click on the processes tab you can see all the current programs that your PC is juggling with at the moment. If you click twice on the CPU title header the applications that are using the most CPU Time will appear at the top of the list. The figures you see are in percentages. At the moment on my PC I can see that WCGrid_AutoDock.exe is taking 97% of my processor (Modern PC's do a lot of thumb twiddling) this is the HIV Project running. If the HPF program is running you will see WCGrid_Rosetta.exe running there instead. As other programs run on your PC you will see them jostling for that top spot. If something other than the World Community Grid is hogging your processor you will see it here. If you don't recognise the programs name and it's not something you expect to be running type the file name into google and you should find out whether it's valid or not - it might be spyware or a virus. Although the last program to hog my CPU was an antispyware program itself.

Hopefully it's just the former

Please post back and let us know how you are getting on.

Regards
Dave

Re: Job running excessive hours

I noticed a slowdown on machine again. Found an Excel viewer (97) using over 97 % CPU. This may have been my problem as I do not use this very much and I may have left the viewer open over the Holidays. Thanks for the help. I have replaced this viewer and problem is gone.
