I've set both the UD.exe file and the AutoDock or Rosetta file to High and Realtime priorities (not at the same time, both set to one or the other) to see if it would help the runtime any. Anyone know if either of those actually help lower the runtime or if there is anything else I can do to increase the turnaround on the workunits? I know they are going to take a bit as it checks what it's supposed to but if there is something I can do to better aid the processing being done on my computer I'm all for it, thanks.

I would not change the priorities. You could end up locking up your machine because important lower priority tasks would not get processor time to run. These settings don't change the speed of your processor so it will not make the grid application run any faster, unless you have other applications using a lot of cpu time. Inverting the priorities is likely to cause problems on your system. If you want the agent to run at a maximum, you should simply not run other cpu intensive applications.

Hello jsprague78,
There has been much discussion along these lines. Most people have decided that the priorities do not matter. (In particular, our staff programmer, Rick Alther, waxes vehement on this subject. ) The WCG applications will run during any idle cycles, and unless you are running a program, all the CPU cycles will be idle except for short bursts when the OS surfaces to check on housekeeping tasks, which should not be interfered with. The important thing that speeds up throughput by several percent is to use 'blank' as a screensaver. (Unless you are running in screensaver-only mode, in which case you need to use the WCG screensaver.) Anything showing moving graphics on the screen will be eating up more CPU cycles than you probably expect. Otherwise, just leave the priorities alone. Oh, check on Task Manager to make sure you have not installed anything that takes up a lot of cycles while running in the background. But that is all you need to do once you have changed your screensaver to 'blank'. mycrofth |

Yeah I only tried it when I wasn't going to use the computer, set it to realtime when I went to bed but it only adjusts the settings for the current workunit, whenever it finishes that one and gets another it resets every file used to process it back to the default priority.
Which while I'm thinking about it can anyone tell me why it has to run a benchmark every time it starts a new workunit? It's very annoying even with the default priority settings as it makes the entire computer effectively lockup. |

Your asked why the benchmark has to run with each work unit.
----------------------------------------Please see here As for the lockups during the benchmarks, these only happen if the priorities have been modified as far as I have ever seen or heard. I think I speak for all involved in congratulating you on your enthusiasm and your efforts to contribute as much as you can. Thank You! Thanks for the link, I used to run Seti@Home on BOINC for over a year so I still tend to think in terms of how that operates. As far as why it would possibly lockup like that I can't remember if I had the priorities adjusted or not as the time it did that was pretty much the only time I was actually using the computer when it finished a workunit and started another one.
Thank you very much for all the information too. |

Please keep in mind that you can use either the UD or the BOINC agent and work on HPF Work Units presently using Windows. At some point in the future (read first half of 2006), you should be able to run both HPF and FAAH using the BOINC agent on Windows.
----------------------------------------Somewhere along in that time frame, I expect there will be additional humanitarian projects (in addition to HPF and FAAH). So if you prefer BOINC on windows, the first of many steps have been taken and some capability is there. As you can tell, the features and capabilities of WCG are growing as fast as the fine crew of technologists can make it happen. And they are just getting started good. WCG is just now 1 year old . Kind Regards and Happy Holidays to your and yours. |
