Hello,
with the World Community Grid web site, I have to log in every time I access it, such as from the BOINC manager to simply access my account. All other BOINC projects I use (SETI, Climate Prediction, Einstein) keep my login info, and I have cookies enabled in IE. I'm using Windows XP SP2, IE 6.0 and BOINC 5.2.13. I never sign out from here, just exit the browser. It's a kind of a nuisance to have to log in every single time, thanks. ![]() |

Session expires...
They need to change that because it's extremely annoying to have to keep logging in. |

Hi Graham,
I don't even see that the session stays up for 30 minutes, and I'm not talking about just using the forums. If I hit the My Grid button from BOINC 5.2.13, it takes me to the web site, where I have to log in, then I get to my account. If I exit the browser here, after about 10 seconds of use, then hit the My Grid button in BOINC again, I have to log in again. It doesn't even have my username or password stored anywhere like most other web logins and I have to keep typing them in by hand. But I guess it's much less annoying than having the diseases we are trying to help combat. ![]() - Bob (I don't know why this project asked me to not use my real name when I created an account) |

However, the session cookie on your browser will be destroyed the minute you close your browser. So if you close your browser, then you will have to login when you visit the website again. |

So, the WCG chose to have a session length cookie for security reasons and the way to get around all these "problems" is just to minimize the browser window rather than close it while recognizing that 30 minutes of inactivity will cause you to be logged out.
----------------------------------------Then to use another browser window for anything else that is non forum. I guess that sounds reasonable to me. On the other hand, I wonder what the security exposure is for having semi-permanent cookies. I suppose the exposure is negligible for home computers but perhaps too high in other environments like schools where pranks are common. Is the above correct ![]() |
