High Daily Points Increase

Morning All

I've moved all of my devices to the new BOINC client for windows over the last month and have started to see quite a leap in my daily points total.

When I was using the UD agent with 10 devices, I was getting about 6000 to 7000 points a day. I have since added a couple of old PC, but have had to stop using BOINC on one of my servers, (Seemed to be slowing it down, but this is an old server.) so I have 11 active devices.

I have watched my daily stats increase to the level where I think something maybe wrong. Yesterday I received 37,399 points and so far today, I have 8,982 for the 12am to 6am slot.

My daily points total did fall for a couple of days during the swap between the UD Agent and BOINC one, as expected, but this seems a little strange.

Is this right ????

Re: High Daily Points Increase

Hi Slug,
You might be onto something real, since we have established a conversion factor of 1 BOINC point = 7 UD points. ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=linpointscalc )

But you have to remember that BOINC points are awarded when results are validated. Some days might see results returned over several days validated. Other days might see just a few validated. So your points are going to increase in bursts, rather than steadily incrementing.

Re: High Daily Points Increase

Hi mycrofth,

Sorry, but I had to leave for work and didn't get to fully describe the increase.

I have tried to keep up to speed on other users problems and comments when using the BOINC client, and was aware that there would be a fall off in my points as my returned results have to be checked by three other computers.

This duly happen for two days where my point fell by a few thousand and then went above my previous average. Again this was as I was expecting as it was the previous days returns getting verified. I was then expecting the daily points total to sort of flattern out.

This final bit doesn't seem to be happening, hence why I think there is a problem.

Lucky that the formula 1 BOINC point = 7 UD points was changed from a factor of 10 otherwise I'd probably be the top crucher each day !!!! Move Over UKSCS , here I come biggrin

[EDIT]

I've just seen that I'm actual No. 5 for yesterday - That can't be right blushing

Re: High Daily Points Increase

I would assume that the conversion factor is benchmarked. Either using a controlled test, or by statistical methods. The nice round number is a little suspect, though.

Checking the numbers in my team, I can't spot any exceptional deviation over different platforms. Further, your average points per hour seems normal.

You do have 98 devices registered. Could there be a problem here, or do you have a lot of inactive registrations?

Re: High Daily Points Increase

Of the 98 devices registered, only 11 are currently active. (Was 12 until yesterday as I've taken one of my servers off BOINC) Only 3 are duplicated BOINC clients and the rest UD clients.

I've looked at my device stats and it does appear that a lot of the units have only just been credited in the last couple of days.

Using one of my standard setup PC as a guide (of which I have 8 identical ones), it seems that I was returning an average of 4 work units when using the UD client. This has now only increased to 5, hence why I'm wondering why the points are quite so high.

Maybe the UD multipler needs adjusting again. confused

[EDIT]

I've just had a UD Agent work unit credited to my stats that has taken 4 days to calculate - trouble is I haven't had the UD agent installed for over two weeks (and I have just double checked !)

I have to wonder a bit myself. While I expect that we really do have an apples to apples situation here, I have to wonder if we don't happen to have to few Fuji's, Macintosh's and Granny Smith's in with our Red Delicious. biggrin

I have a laptop running WinXP Pro. I normally run WCG whenever the machine is powered on - typically 21-22 hours a day with the 2-3 hours being my commute time and getting settled in and powered back up time. I ran HPF WU's prior to FAAH and am set to run whichever of the two I'm sent now. The Device Information section has an Overall Performance number of 128-135 for my machine from WU to WU.

At 00:00 05/16/2005 UTC, my stats looked like this:
Points Generated (Rank): 91,243 (4990)
Avg. Run Time per Cal. Day: 20:32:41
Avg. Points per Cal. Day: 506.90556

Those grew steadily to where as of 00:00 09/26/2005 UTC, they were:
Points Generated (Rank): 163,907 (4299)
Avg. Run Time per Cal. Day: 21:10:18
Avg. Points per Cal. Day: 523.66454

As of 00:00 12/16/2005 UTC, I'm now at:
Points Generated (Rank): 207,726 (4,256)
Avg. Run Time per Cal. Day: 21:23:16
Avg. Points per Cal. Day: 528.56489

My rank has been as high as 4209. I realize that BOINC points don't get awarded until after the validation process and that explains the greater day to day variability. There have been a good number of new members lately with the start of FAAH but I would expect them to be ranked lower than me. So over 4 months, I moved up in rank by 700 and in a bit under 3 months, I moved up by only 45.

I have wondered about this but not given it much thought until I saw this thread. confused confused confused

Re: High Daily Points Increase

I am running BOINC client. To help put this in perspective I am running an AMD +2600, 1 gig ram.

I have so far returned 11 results, with an average of 234 points per result, with an average run time of 4 hours and 22 minutes.

Re: High Daily Points Increase

Just thought I'd post a quick update to my stats query.

Looks like I may have jumped the gun a tad blushing

Yesterdays total stats fell right back to pretty much the average I've seen since using the BOINC client. I had not realised quite how many BOINC result had been returned and not verified.

However, I'm averaging an awful lot more points with the BOINC client than the UD client. It maybe something to do with with the change in projects we're all working on (I moved to the BOINC client at about the same time as FAAI came on line), but it could mean the points multiplier neads a tweak.

Hope this maybe useful to you admin guys. (Might try and drag all my stats into a spreadsheet to have a closer look when I get the time.)

Re: High Daily Points Increase

I've been pondering this a while.

I've moved 4 of my systems to the BOINC windows client. On 1, my points production has dropped, on another, it's about the same, and on the other two its about 30% higher.

The UD client 'scores' your computer, where as BOINC scores your CPU only (and other bits insofar as running the benchmark). Apparently in the good old days people who were point aware used to hurry down to their local PC world and buy enough RAM to boost that component up to 1.25Gb to give a score of 300 in order to make up for a slower processor...

Anyhow, for my money the biggest difference has to be the fact that the UD client 'limits' the 'overall' system 'score' to 200 or therabouts. If you are running BOINC on a cpu that is significantly faster than the UD 'benchmark' machine you can expect to see an increase.

If you are running on a machine slower than say, an AMD 2000 XP, you can expect a drop in points, as the additional memory, disk, network bandwith etc count for zilch.

So 7 may be the 'right' factor. It's just that we are no longer comparing apples with pears.

Jonathan.

Re: High Daily Points Increase

Most of my machines are now on BOINC rather than the UD agent. I have noticed a slight uplift in points/ hour on the P3's (all run 256MB RAM and therefore score quite low under UD). My faster machines have increased the points / hour a lot more - they all score well over 200 on CPU score for UD and are therefore limited in this regard.
