Thread: To long computing for FAAH ??? |

I am using WCG Agent for Windows (FAAH) and it was very strange for me that it was computing one result for 12-14 hours. I was using UD Agent before (HPFP) it was computing (on the same computer) for about 8-9 hours. I' ve thought that FAAH needs more power and time to compute, but I've checked average time for the other users and their times was 8-9 hours. Is something wrong with my WCG Agent (version 3.0 2844)?? (I have Sempron 2400+ and 512 MB of RAM)

Olson said the project's first phase will test about 2,000 compounds representing a much larger set of similar chemicals against about 200 mutant variations of the HIV protein. That phase should take about three months, depending on how many computers participate and for how long, he said. A single home computer working constantly would likely take more than 20,000 years. If each work unit completely studied one of the 2,000 * 200 = 400,000 interactions, then a home computer would take much less than 1,000 years. Therefore, we are splitting up the work into many short work units for each interaction. Therefore, the short run time per work unit is simply the result of a choice made for the convenience of our members. |

Nothing is wrong with your computer. Some work units just take longer than others. I haven't been timing them exactly, but I know that it can easily vary by the number of hours you mention here. I've had HPF units take that long, and also some that take half that long. |

I would like to second what nelsoc said here and extend it a bit. I had a FAAH Work Unit that ran a little over 100 hours on a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz. I have also had runs that lasted 4 hours. So the variation in the individual Work Units is dramatic. Unfortunately the folks cutting the problem into bite sized hunks can't tell just how chewy the hunks are until they are run.
