I have been running the BOINC client on a Windows box with HT for the last 4 or 5 days. The BOINC client does fully utilize my CPU where the UD client did not, however I recieved some 600+ points yesterday and less than 200 points today (This system did 800 points a day running at 50% CPU with the UD client). What is the average turnaround for validation? What happened to the points for the 2, 30+ hour jobs that were completed 2 days ago? Is this Boinc platform buggy, or just VERY slow?

Hello EVWOOD,
Validation is not deterministic. It depends on whether or not one of the duplicate work units gets sent to a slow / fast computer whose owner runs / does not run it at night. Also on how many games are played. ![]() This problem will not seem so troublesome once we get the BOINC results page programmed so you can follow your returned results through each step. mycrofth |

OK. I thought some hard data may help, as my questions were really not answered. I should mention that the usage pattern on my system has not changed, only the WCG client, from UD to BOINC.
I run my system 24x7 and have a Intel P4 with Hyper Threading. Using the BOINC client, I now have 2 jobs running at all times (1 for each simulated processor). If I focus on just the runtime, the WCG statistics are off as to how many hours a day my system runs. My assumption is that the maximum number of hours of runtime for a given day would be 48 hours on a 2 processor system. In addition, the number of results returned in a given day are off looking at the last three days. Below, I have extracted the "Finished Upload" messages from the BOINC manager log. I am assuming that when this message appears, a valid result has been returned to the BOINC server. I am then comparing the "upload finished" message with the statistics provided under "Device Statistics" on the WCG web site for my user and BOINC device. (I also am matching MST with UTC in the reporting, 00:00 UTC is 05:00 PM MST) BOINC Manager log extracts for 12/06: 12/6/2005 4:12:11 AM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of de935_1F_1_0 12/6/2005 6:41:43 AM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of de935_11_3_0 12/6/2005 8:34:40 AM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of de309_32_6_0 12/6/2005 2:02:31 PM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb032_05_3_0 WCG "Device Statistics" for BOINC device on 12/06: Date------------Runtime-------------Points-----Number of Results 12/06/2005----0:000:14:55:59-----604-------3 Results returned are off by 1 for 12/06. Shows just under 15 hours of runtime. BOINC Manager log extracts for 12/07: 12/6/2005 6:40:57 PM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb054_08_1_0 12/7/2005 2:36:43 AM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb081_05_4_0 12/7/2005 6:19:41 AM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb027_12_7_0 12/7/2005 1:34:10 PM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb088_05_1_0 12/7/2005 1:45:06 PM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb080_4B_1_0 WCG "Device Statistics" for BOINC device on 12/07: Date-------------Runtime--------------Points----Number of Results 12/07/2005-----0:000:07:10:03------286------1 Results returned are off by 4 for 12/07. Shows a mere 7 hours of runtime BOINC Manager log extracts for 12/08: 12/7/2005 7:28:56 PM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb109_19_0_0 12/7/2005 11:02:50 PM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb116_22_1_0 12/8/2005 8:27:29 AM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb101_09_5_0 12/8/2005 10:33:33 AM|World Community Grid|Finished upload of eb144_00_1_0 WCG "Device Statistics" for BOINC device on 12/08: Date-------------Runtime-------------Points-----Number of Results 12/08/2005-----0:000:16:48:38-----718-------2 Results returned are off by 2 for 12/08. Shows less than 17 hours of runtime So the data above clearly demonstrates that one or more of the following statements is true: 1. The BOINC client has a bug and is reporting in it's logs that it has uploaded a result to the server, when in fact it has not. 2. The BOINC Servers have a bug and are not handling the properly uploaded result. 3. The process the BOINC platform is using to validate and award points and report them on the web site is VERY slow and I just need to wait for the system to "catch up". 4. I clearly have too much free time on my hands and should just remove the BOINC client, re-enable the UD client, and forget about the 50% of CPU the UD client does not use. ![]() Anyway, there is the data to support my assertion. The WCG statistics are off by 7 results and untold runtime hours for the last 3 days in my case. I am not sure how having a new website would help explain these issues. |

I see nothing unusual in your stats. Patience, grasshopper. |

Hi EVWOOD,
3. The process the BOINC platform is using to validate and award points and report them on the web site is VERY slow and I just need to wait for the system to "catch up". The returned result waits until 3 more identical results are returned. Then it is validated. The BOINC Results page lets you see how many results you have returned to the server, how many of those have been validated, how many (if any) have been invalidated and how many are awaiting validation. Results can hang around for days awaiting validation, which is why the Results page is so important to reassure members. But we have not programmed it yet. [Before snow drifts reach the eaves .. Er-r-r, anyway, it will be done Real Soon Now.] ![]() mycrofth |

EVWOOD,
You have 11 results that are waiting for other results to be returned in order for validation to be run. The actual validation process is extremely quick (it takes less then a second per workunit). However, it can take quite a while for the results from other users to be returned in order for validation to be performed. You actually happen to be the victim of some bad luck - those 11 results you have been returned are all waiting for just one more result to come back and validation will be performed. You are likely to have a big day some day soon. Kevin |
