confused 64 Bit Agent

Since there are more and more 64 bit capable processors and operating systems now available, has anyone looked into supporting a 64 bit Agent for both Windows and Linux ? confused

Re: 64 Bit Agent

It hasn't happened yet, but can always be run in the WOW64 partition.
(windows32-on-windows64) of 64 bit Windows XP Operating System.

If you have a 64 bit system that is running a 32 bit OS, no changes are required.

A 64 bit agent is probably low on the priority list.

Re: 64 Bit Agent

i have been running the 32 bit agent on Windows 64 bit edition for quite some time. While i dont know how to change the cpu throttle, it seems as though its smart enough to figure out that even though my CPU is hyperthreaded, running both "processors" at 100 percent is slower than running each "processor" at 50%

Re: 64 Bit Agent

Do you know if it would finish the calculations faster if it suported the 64 bit processors confused

If so it would be a good idea to make the update and thereby get more units finished faster. wink

I would like to finish the units faster than I do now...and I use a 64 bit processor.

Re: 64 Bit Agent

For the current projects, using 64 bit mode would not make a substantial difference.

64-bit processors give you advantages in 3 areas:
1. Doing extrememely large or precise math (64 bit integers and floats)
2. Accessing very large amounts of memory.
3. Ability to move more data per clock cycle.

Of the 3, only #3 would give these projects an advantage.

These are just generic advantages. There are likely other speed advantages for specific chips, e.g. the AMD 64.

Due to limitations of the UD platform we are not able to provide different executables optimized for different processors.

I too run a 64-bit processor (AMD 64 3000+), but unless you run a 64-bit operating system, you can't run a 64-bit program anyway.

As 64-bit chips become more mainstream, you never know though. Maybe someday.
