Yes, the real reason I bought the PS2 for my cousin's daughter was because it was a DVD player for the entire family. After the novelty was over, it disappeared from the living room into her bedroom. But it was a good strategy for Sony. They seem to be continuing it with the Blu-Ray for the PS3, which will allow much longer series on a disk and do away with extra DVDs for extra features added to a movie.
But I thought I saw Microsoft starting a strategy with the Xbox. Develop games that can be easily modified from a general PC version and specialized for the Xbox. This would encourage developers by increasing their potential profit. But the Xbox360 drops that strategy and offers nothing extra to the consumer other than a DVD with potential HDTV support. |

Hi mycrofth
----------------------------------------Alledgedly (I cannot confirm ) it has the same front end as XP Media Centre(er) Edition.Microsoft are aiming for that Multimedia Entertainment hub. You will be able to stream Video, Music and watch that Digital Camera Slide show from your Media Center or Vista enabled PC (Just like the old days of 35mm Slide Projectors sadly it was boring then and it still is now however you like to spin it) It's just not going to work. Listening to Music through your TV just isn't right as is viewing stills. As much as they try Music is to accompany your life which is why it works in the car and on your PC. Unfortunately getting someone to stop watching the Tele to listen to a MP3 isn't going to happen. If you are going to do that you might as well turn on the device that was designed for the Job - your Stereo. Switching from moving pictures to stills also isn't going to win any fans. TV works as it's a communal event. PC are, probably, always going to be a solitary application. Can you imagine the family rows as you turn off The Simpsons to read an email. Begining to think MS might have done me a favour with their botched launch. I might quit while I'm only £20 out of pocket. Still it would be nice to know what a 3 Core 3.2Ghz each PowerPC processor can do coupled with ATI's latest. The possibility of a WCG agent for the XBOX360 might not be a bad idea though once people have stopped shelling out up to £1000 on Ebay for them in the UK. Guess you better wait a little before trying to get one of those...they just received some bad news from buyers who say that the machine is overheating. They pursue them for selling a game station that was knew to have troubles just to get the market faster.

You may be better off to wait a little while anyway, there is already a class action lawsuit pending in the US because the console has serious design flaws that cause it to overheat and then freeze up.
Robert Byers, the palintiff, contends the machine’s power supply and central processing unit get too hot, affecting chips that are sensitive to heat, which in turn cause the machine to simply lock up and quit working. He accuses the Bill Gates company of being in such a hurry to get the new gear to market before Christmas – and before its competitor, Sony PlayStation could release its latest upgrade - that it didn’t check to make sure the device was ready for primetime. |

Overheating is always the Achilles heel of a new game console. The original PS/2 caused some worries this way. Once they start getting the chip count down in later revisions, these worries go away.
