I am considering putting WCG on a several machines that completely rebuild every morning (or on a reboot). When they rebuild, they will all get the exact same image. What would be the best way to do this so that I dont have them work on the same individual project day after day? Also is there a way to flush the cache so that I can get the most information back to the grid before it is wiped out on this rebuild?
Thanks in advance. Greg |

Hello tumprgt,
First, we ought to have more information to think about. This is Windows Support so you are running: A) BOINC Windows with multiple work units cached B) UD.exe with UD Mon caching multiple work units C) UD.exe with only one work unit If the answer is C, then there is no way for you to return a partial result. What program does the rebuilding? We have already heard of one such program. [Umm... ?Deep Freeze ?? I would have to look over my notes.] How do you intend to reinstall WCG each morning? Replicate a complete directory minus work unit or replicate the installation package? It sounds tricky, so we need to know some details before we think hard about this. mycrofthg |

We use a program called Rembo. It stores an image of the complete machine on an "unseen" partion of the hard drive and does a comparison of the two images (production and what I want it to be) and deletes and/or adds the original information back to the production image. For example if I have placed a music file in My Docs and the user places a Pic in My Docs and erases my music file, upon a reboot, Rembo will trash their Pic and add my music file back in.
The thing is this "original" image is also stored on a server so that the entire lab will get the same image. In this image I will place WCG or a link to it if it needs to be network installed. The work units can be the same if need be. The Question is how do I install it and make it work properly? I have not done anything to the image at this point so we have a clean slate to work with. |

Hi tumprgt,
Looking at Rembo Technology ( http://www.rembo.com/support_documentation.htm ) I see that they are up to 4.0. Could you tell me just which version you are using? I assume we are talking about Rembo Auto-Deploy, not Rembo ToolKit. mycrofth |

If you were to divide the drive into multiple partitions and only rebuild that partition from which you boot the system, the World Community Grid could be installed on a different partition. I am not familiar with Rembo, but that sounds like an option which I would expect to find with that type of application. |

Another option that you might use that comes to mind, depending on your situation and resources that would give you another "disk image":
----------------------------------------Some clever individual wrote on one of these forums about putting all of WCG materials on one of those USB jump drives (little memory sticks that you plug in the USB port and acts like a disk drive). If you have one or more of those, that you could stick in the back of the machine(s) that might be an alternative. Of course, you would have to have a way to restart the process after each rebuild. |

They are student lab machines. As we know, students hava tendency to do what ever they want to a compuer, ie change the background to explicit pictures, add peer to peer file sharing, install IM, ...
----------------------------------------This is a way so that we (lab managers) don't have to do it weekly with CD's and put our efforts into more important things like getting WCG to work on these machines. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 5, 2005 4:04:36 PM] |

For each lab that we have, we may have differing images, but the machines within that lab are all exactly the same. |
