So after running, and returning one result, I now have no tasks being worked on. When I open the icon for WCG, it says that either the sytem is off line (which it is not), or that there is no connection to the internet available - which is also not the case. I am thinking that it has something to do with my NORTAN anti-virus, firewalls. I checked this site for information on that, but I am not savy enough to understand what the recommnedations are. Am I supposed to open port 80? In which case, it is a port (under the NORTON window) that I remove, thus traffic can enter and exit; but would that not lead me to opening a port for all to access my computer and do unpleasent things to my system? So I figure that is not the answer. But what is?
Please help, I want the connection for WCG to work so my computer can get obtain another task. Thank you for your assistance. |

I am having a similar issue. when i open up the windows grid agent, i get the agent offline message. i click OK, and then it proceeds to download about 870K bytes from the grid server. once the download finishes the agent imediately pauses. when i reopen the grid agent, this process repeats. There is no way that i am able to finish a result in < 1 second, so i think something must be wrong here. i have been using the grid agent for a long while now, and didn't have any issues HPF. The issue seems to have started when the new project began.
Any ideas? So after running, and returning one result, I now have no tasks being worked on. maybe you got the new aids work, where 256MB ram is not really enough and the agent will stop. you may have to add RAM, or do HPF only.

As soon as I switched to HPF only tasks; a task began immediately. Thank you. I'll up grade my computer for the AIDS research. |

Thanks for the suggestion, but i don't think that's it. i have 1GB of ram on this computer so i don't think its a memory issue. and my hard drive has at leat 13GB free.
Here is the thing that really blows my mind. When i was working on HPF, i was averaging 3-6 units a day (i have more than 1 computer) and i was earning about 500 points a day. Now that i have switched over to the Aids project, i am averaging 25+ units a day (yesterday i had 44!!!) so something seems to be really screwy here, unless there are a number of extremely small work units that i keep getting. it doesn't make sense to me that if that was the case that they would continue being sent to this same device, seems like it would be random, some short work units, some longer... |

Hello mkucera,
I guess the question is: are you returning lots of valid results -- or are you just downloading new work units frequently ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1883 )? I cannot be sure from what you have posted. inquiringly, mycrofth |

Yea, i guess that is exactly the question i am trying to get answered. How can i tell if i am actually processing valid results? the agent does communicate with the server frequently, but it doesn't seem to perform any work after communicating with the server. it takes < 1 second after the communication ends to get the agent offline message. if i minimize the agent and re-open the agent, the process occurs again in the same fashion. i can repeat this indefinitely.
The article you referenced seems to fit my symptons pretty closely unfortunately i don't think any of the resolutions really apply. i am running a virus scan now, but i am 99.99% sure that there are no virus' on this computer. I've got 1GB of ram and a 1.6GB page file, and like i believe i mentioned in one of my previous posts, i didn't have any issues running HPF. i also looked up the Data Execution post you referenced, and the settings on this computer were set to allow Data Execution for all programs except those i select, and the UD.exe was not selection (nothing was selected) which means this should have been available to all running programs. Any other ideas? Thanks for the help and your time. Mark |

Just a couple of idea's that have had me tearing my hair out in the past.
----------------------------------------1) McAffee Parental Controls if you install this program you will get these symptoms 2) I've had problems with MTU size on my ADSL router if you leave it at default of 1420 it's usually a winner I've also just trialed Window OneCare Live beta and it dosn't let the World Community Agent download at all without switching it's firewall off The other possibility is that after all of those HPF work units might be one of dust in your CPU heatsink. Sometimes it's amazing what a Dyson can do for your PC Let us know how you get on Dave |
