(1) You need permission from the work folks to use their machine(s). Some have gotten into hot water by not asking.
----------------------------------------(2) It is possible to "sneakernet" the files in the WCG directory and subdirectories by copying them to/from another machine that "IS" on the internet. (3) If you are just trading one machine for one machine, you might as well just run on the one that is on the internet. If both are trying to run as separate devices, it's easy to mess something up. (4) It is possible to copy many machines onto one internet machine by the use of UDMonitor on the internet machine, but that introduces a scary amount of complexity that is not for the timid.

I came here looking for exactly the same answer. I had already been told about Sneaker Net when I asked the question at The Grid.org a few weeks ago before coming to WCG. But it all seemed so complex for what I'd expect to be quite a common request. In my case, I have loads of powerful 2Gb RAM dual processor machines at work that run 24\7 - they'd rattle through lods of work units each week. But the admin of Sneaker Net seems like too much hard work for us lazy folk!
Has no one (or can't someone) write a basic application to make this process easier? I have some basic programming skills and while not enough to write a full program to do the job, I can't imagine it would actually be that hard to do. Just design it so that two instances of the application run on both the standalone machine and the Internet connected one, and then just have the standalone 'ask' for data from a source (floppy disk for example) put there by the Internet connected instance that asks and sends new and processed data to and from WCG. |

Here is something written by David Autumns
----------------------------------------I have a usb memory stick and I copied the whole of the WorldCommunityGrid folder contents from Program Files on my duff PC's C Drive. Fitting the USB Stick to some poor unsuspecting PC without the agent installed. Double click on UD.exe on the memory stick and Bob's your Uncle crunching again The PC I had attached it to didn't have an Internet connection so the agent ran to completion of the Work Unit and then paused. Removing the stick and plugging it back into a currently crunching PC, stop the existing agents run and double click the UD.exe on the stick and it happily uploads the WU to the WCG and collects a new one into the stick. Plugging USB memory stick back into a PC, crunching again. Not forgetting to start the internet donor PC's WCG agent back up. |

That's superb!! Thanks for that. I did not realise it was that easy. I have done the above. Basically I stopped WCG on my home PC, took a copy of my WCG folder onto the thumb, brought in to work, ran it off the thumb for an hour, and when it finished what my home PC was working on at the time I took the copy I connected it to the net, results were sent, new WU received which is running now. Great.
Thanks Ted |
