In light of the holiday, and the fact the Dec 1 is World AIDS Day, I have considered informing the newstations local to me (I live in Pittsburgh, Pa) Of the WCG and the FA@H Project.
----------------------------------------I dont know if they will 'bite', but I figured I had better ask before doing so. IF they were to air this story, would WCG be able to handle the likely sudden UPshift in hits, especialy if more then one station covers it? Would the WCG agent server be able to hande the (hopfully) sudden addintion of memebers? Again, I am not going to hold my breath, but even in a large, 'higher profile' city such as the 'Burg', I have seen far less newsworthy items grace the airwaves. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, eh? At the same time I'd hate to see the WCG 'choke' on the potential traffic. I wont proceed with this idea until I hear from a memeber 'in the know' from here. Just an idea, Scotchula P.S. In case of any suggestions, I have posted the email I intend to send to the respective networks: ************************ 20 Million Already Dead; 40 Million Infected; 16,000 NEWLY infected EACH DAY! AIDS will ultimately claim the lives of more then all the worlds wars, natural catastrophes and diseases combined. December 1st is WORLD AIDS DAY. In light of these facts, I figured (Network Name) may be interested in the following information. IBM, WORLD COMMUNITY GRID and THE SCRIPPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE have joined forces to combat this disease: "Working with the renowned Scripps Research Institute, a private, non-profit research organization engaged in basic biomedical science based in San Diego, World Community Grid will host its second major project -- the Internet-based FightAIDS@Home, an evolutionary research project dedicated to finding new AIDS therapies. "The new World Community Grid initiative will deploy massive computer power to develop novel chemical strategies effective in the treatment of HIV-infected individuals in the face of evolving drug resistance in the virus. Developing new, more robust therapies to prevent the onset of AIDS in individuals infected with HIV will be the focus of the Olson Laboratory project at The Scripps Research Institute. The computational challenges in approaching this problem are the vast number of possible mutations that may occur, and the huge number of possible chemical compounds that might be tested against them," said Dr. Arthur J. Olson, Anderson Research Chair Professor, Department of Molecular Biology at The Scripps Research Institute. "The new World Community Grid project will run millions upon millions of docking computations to evaluate potential interactions between compounds and mutant viral proteins." "World Community Grid offers individuals and businesses, foundations, associations, universities, and not-for-profit organizations the opportunity to donate the idle and unused time on a computer by downloading World Community Grid's free software and registering at www.worldcommunitygrid.org. Fast, easy, safe and secure, more than 100,000 individuals are now volunteering power from 170,000 computers to help find a cure for AIDS through World Community Grid." As you can see, I believe this is a very worthwhile story to cover. As a victim of HIV/AIDS I have a personal stake in this. Please look over the links I have provided and consider this for a piece on your network, or at the very least, your website. If you choose to air this, I urge you to stress the cost free, secure, and simple nature of this project. Thank you for your time, ***** In the email I have included links to, of course the WCG, and the IBM and SRI's Newsletters on the subject. Let me know if there is anything I should add or remove. Hi, thanks for the suggestion. World Community Grid is already contacting many of the organizations that might have an interest in World Aids Day. The goal for our outreach is to create an awareness of World Community Grid and the FightAIDS@Home project.
As an individual member of World Community Grid, you can contact whomever you want to. The only thing we ask you not to do is to represent yourself as an official spokesperson of World Community Grid. As a member of World Community Grid, you have every right to tell others about it as we all have the same goals: Have more people participate so that the research can run faster and hopefully lead scientists to cures. Speaking of scientists, if you know someone doing humanitarian research that might need more compute power, please send them here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewSubmitAProposal.do |

The Register has noticed the connection between World Aids day and the FA@H project at WCG. The main article is about a SETI change to boinc, but it's in there.

IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN SEND INVITATION TO MY FRIENDS TO JOIN WORLD COMMUNITY GRID BY JUST ENTERING THEIR EMAIL ID ? A STANDARD MESSAGE CAN THEN GO AS THOUGH I AM INVITING THEM TO JOIN THIS EFFORT. I FIND IT UNWORKABLE TO WRITE A EMAIL TO EACH OF MY FRIENDS. MY LIST OF CONTACTS IS TOO HUGE TO DO THAT. PLEASE SEE IF I CAN ONLY ADD EMAIL ID OF MY FRIENDS AND AN AUTOMATIC INVITATION CAN GO. I PROMISE TO YOU THAT ME AND MY FRIENDS CAN HUGELY CONTRIBUTE TO QUICK SUCCESS. IF POSSIBLE PLEASE REPLY ME ON MY EMAIL BECAUSE I MAY NOT KNOW WHERE MY QUESTION AND ANSWERS ARE. PROBABLY THERE SHOULD BE A PLACE TO TRACK OUR RECENT DISCUSSIONS. THANKS FOR A GREAT EFFORT AND I AM SURE YOU WILL WIN.

Hello V.S.S.SARMA,
All you need to do is write a short email about why you have decided to use your computer to help FightAIDS@Home by installing the World Community Grid software on your computer. Then say that you are notifying all your friends in hopes that they will also join the World Community Grid. Then include some links. The first link might as well be the join now page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewJoinNow.do Then some information links such as: http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewFaahResearch.do http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/index.jsp And now you are ready for the really important part! ![]() Just start pasting all of your friends' email addresses into a word processing document, separated by a comma but without any line breaks. Make it one long line that wraps around to the next lower line. When you are through, name the document Friends or Contacts. From now on, you can send one email to all your friends if you want to. Just copy and paste that long line of email addresses into the BCC address line of your email program. BCC stands for Blind Copy. When you send the one email, a copy will go to each email address. The Blind means that no one will see the email address of anybody else. If you copy all the email addresses to CC, it will act the same way but it will show all the email addresses. You will be giving away all the private email addresses of your friends, which is considered impolite. This lets you send holiday greetings to everybody, but be careful not to overdo it, or some distant acquaintances will start to think that your emails are spam, not friendly greetings. So all you need to do is write ONE (1) email. ![]() mycrofth |
