New Security Page on Website

Depriens has made a suggestion here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4811#37506

We need a Security page that explains how safe it is to download the World Community Grid Agent. We need it where anybody contemplating the download can see it, not hidden in FAQs. It should link to the more technical information but it should be suitable for a non-technical computer user.

I think that this suggestion is right on target. We must be losing a percentage of the people who look at the download to vague, uncertain fears.

Re: New Security Page on Website

I agree with this and found it comforting that the forums are open to non-members when I considered starting this project. I was able to 'fish around' and read answers to any questions I had before taking the plunge.

However, I feel that for those with little time to browse, potential questions about the agent and security could cause them to 'file for later use' and then perhaps forget or worse, never come back.

A section in the home page about security and how the agent works (i.e. it will not slow down your machine when you are running your main tasks) would help those that are considering the agent in a corporate setting reach their conclusions quicker and easier.

Re: New Security Page on Website

I agree wholeheartedly! As you said I think it should be a very prominently placed link on the home page. Perhaps as well, within this link, links could be placed to the newsletters on the F@AH project from IBM and Scripps to add further validity to the group as a whole.

I also think, (coming from a newly joined member), That a 'How to/Setup Process' for the agent be added. To guied the 'knowlege needy' thru the setup. Granted, its easier then setting up an email account, but the average Joe doesn't know that. And just saying its quick and easy isn't enough. I am by no means a TECHHead, nor am I nieve of the basics of computers, but even I figured there would be more to the setup process.

Just my two cents.

Re: New Security Page on Website

Thanks Mycrofth for picking it up! I think such page will be helpful for a lot of people.

It will be easier for me personally as well to explain to others why there isn't a security risk. I'm not the best in describing methods or problems, I always forget some important info. blushing
