BOINC Device Name

Morning Everyone,

I have two identical Windows 2003 servers, one at work and a backup one at home with a RAID 10 configuration.

Every month or so, I remirror the offsite server with a couple of disks from the onsite one.

Whilst I have been using the UD agent, I have had to rejoin the grid again from the offsite server and have given it a suitable device name so its stats are separated from the onsite one.

With the BOINC client, the device name is set automatically, so my question is, which registry or file entry does the BOINC read to get the device name?

Re: BOINC Device Name

For the Windows UD-based agent you should simply not clone the WorldCommunityGrid install directory at all. A backup is not needed because our redundant work - voting scheme handles any member outages or problems. Furthermore, if you clone the directories and run them both, one or both of them will get disabled and need re-registration after the servers discover the clone. Each device needs its seperate unique entry in our database to keep track of what is going on. The unique id is not based on the device name, but rather a key that is kept in one of the files. Also, the files are tied together in a way that if you just copy some and not others, all of the work for that work unit will be discarded. Another post will explain the Boinc picture.

Re: BOINC Device Name

Hi Viktors,

Thanks for the info on the Windows UD Agent.

When I have cloned my onsite server to the offsite one, I have delete the UD agent data on the offsite server and reregistered. I have now moved almost all of my PCs and server to the BOINC Windows client.

I was guessing that the BOINC client checks the registry for the PCs name, however, I was rather surprised to find that, according to my device list on the WCG website, the internal name of my domain is tacked onto the end of the computers registered name.

As far as I'm aware, the registry does not have one single registry entry that holds this information.
