Re: High CPU on WCG + new BOINC v8.2.4 client

I saw this as well on my Windows 11 desktop with v8.2.4. I have the max CPU usage at 10% which worked fine on v8.0.2, but after upgrading, the CPU usage went to 100% and stayed there. I rolled back to v8.0.2 for now.

Re: High CPU on WCG + new BOINC v8.2.4 client

@BobbyB -- I should tally-up the mix but I haven't. They're about 40:60 Windows:Linux.

I'm moving toward Linux on all, but have a few that have to stay on Windows for side-functions.

All are Intel with the exception of one large AMD machine. I'm slowly moving the old boxes out and replacing with larger processor machines.

The heat is oppressive here in the South. Last week I almost turned a few off due to the Hurricane fans in here not able to remove the heat fast enough. Several were moved to the Basement which is much cooler (I may need to move more down there) and a separate room. Last year I "cooked" three Dells and had to replace those. I said I'd not let them get that hot again.

Yes, the boxes are scripted to auto-logon, launch the BOINC Mgr (just so I can see if there's an issue), etc. Three(?) are Win10 which I must upgrade by mid-October due to end-of-life for that OS. Linux is 99% Debian for the Security Updates (believe I have a Mint box in the mix). They're on KVM's to reduce the number of monitors.

All are set to auto-update for patches.

Not too much maintenance required -- I use the WCG Dashboard and view the Devices tab under "My Contribution". I sort by the "Last Result" column in ascending order. If I see one that hasn't updated WCG with a result in a few hours, I immediately know something is amiss.

Thanks for the shout...

Re: High CPU on WCG + new BOINC v8.2.4 client

@Kirel2 -- Thanks for relaying your experiences as well!

Just like you observed, BOINC v8.0.2 is behaving much better on that single machine I noticed it on [Intel Core i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz].

I have bigger and smaller processor machines, but that was the *only* one it was noticed on, so I suspect there's something about BOINC and that particular CPU.

I'll be much slower on upgrading clients going forward and defer to the old adage of "If it's not broke, don't fix it" laughing

Have a great rest of the week, and thanks again for the shout!

@Spiderrman

Ha! Did the same. Got rid of 2 old 4-core laptops by changing an AMD 3600x to a 5950x. It more than made up for those 8 cores I removed. Still have them to test this and that. I also use a KVM.

Created my own script to test from my daily Win laptop. Works on Linux also.

C:\BOINC>tasks 69
Number of tasks: 1100
32 CPUs: 1915.95 Hours 79.8312 Days
Per CPU: 59.8734 Hours 2.49472 Days

"If it ain't broke don't fix it" Yes, and I also apply it to the OS: Ubuntu 22.04

The desktop I run BOINC on is a 16-core Intel i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz, for reference.

Re: High CPU on WCG + new BOINC v8.2.4 client

BOINC v8.2.8 for Windows is now out. I've confirmed that the bug with high CPU usage in 8.2.4 has been fixed.
