When running 7 tasks at a time, my i7-5800X3D typically runs 64 bit tasks in < 0.9 hrs, and the occasional i686 task in about 1.15 hours. Today I saw a task in boinc's task list over 2 hours. Looking at the properties, it was an i86 task. I can't say for sure I've never run one of these before, but I've looked at a lot of tasks in my results list over the years and never saw one like that.
For those of you who have run MCM for a long time, this may not be new to you, but I thought it an oddity to see this after running MCM for more than a few years. |

I have run over 400,000 of the MCM and never bothered to look at that under the properties. there is probably some difference in the backend programming, but for me, on several different machines, each one stays remarkably consistent within its work unit time. If you really want a definitive answer, you will probably have to get somebody who has access to the source code and ask them. Cheers Edit:spelling

I'm not sure I really want an answer. I was just kind of pointing out something I saw that was no doubt rare, and kind of interesting. I'm wondering what kind of processor (or OS) is running this project that only has x86 instruction sets. I'm going to try to remember to look at that task in the list each day as I would like to see how long whatever CPU it is takes to complete that task.

Thanks for pointing that out, geophi! I had already been wondering why there were some rare outliers occasionally and just now I saw another one. Normally it takes about an hour to process a task of MCM1, but this outlier took 20 minutes more. It appears that it was being processed by the i686 version of the application (wcgrid_mcm1_map_7.61_i686-pc-linux-gnu), just like its wingman. That explains it.

Just fired up an old Acer Aspire 5600 laptop. It has an Intel T2050 CPU which is 32-bit only i686 architecture. OS is linux lubuntu. It has boinc ver 7.9.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu installed. Just for grins connected to WCG. Two MCM WUs download and they are running OK

I see come MCM tasks running 2 hours on my 7950X CPUs. Not many, but a few. They all seems to finish, just 2X normal.

My i686 Wus are about 25% complete. Estimate is about 5 hours.
----------------------------------------Will update here when completed and (hopefully) verified... Edit: The two WUs have finished. CPU/Elapsed hours 4.89/5.02 and 5.42/5.56 Now the wait for verification

Hi Tony! Nice to see you again.
I have some recent statistics from a number of completed workunits where an i686 was involved (where the Fedora Linux tasks are mine): MCM1_0226732_9721_0 Linux Debian Valid 2024-10-21T15:12:03 2024-10-22T04:04:32 1.17/1.17 75.7/76.7 Obviously, the 4.15.0-142-generic kernel belongs to a certain machine. I figured out what was confusing me. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D usually runs in Linux. Running 7 MCMs at a time with 64 bit was below 0.9 hours per task. Mixing in the occasional i686 task that usually finished in about 1.15 hours.
The last several days I've been running it in Windows and the 64 bit tasks finish in the same time as 64 bit tasks in Linux. However, the x86 tasks as identified by Windows take almost twice as long as the i686 tasks as identified by Linux. So I was confused. Different naming convention for the executables for the 32 bit tasks between OS's and considerably longer to finish a such a task in Windows. What must be happening is that while MCM is equally optimized for 64 bit Windows and Linux, the Windows executable for 32 bit tasks doesn't have the same level of optimization as for Linux. |

Other than looking at the properties while the task is running, is there an api which would give the executable of the completed work unit ? I know it shows up in the results log for each unit, but I don't know how to have a quick and easy way to list this information for each of the completed units.
