PC Rebuild

So about to totally rebuild my rig.

For World Community Grid research should I concentrate more on cpu power/processors or a good GPU ?

Re: PC Rebuild

CPU the more threads the better, GPU projects are few and far between.

Re: PC Rebuild

You should prioritize the build based on your specific needs outside of distributing computing. DC is intended to use spare cycles on otherwise normally used equipment. Anything other than that is effectively a charitable contribution, and that's best done directly to support the project, as it's sorely needed.

That said, outside of the above I'd focus on power efficiency and CPU. The on-going cost of power is something that should be calculated in advance.

Re: PC Rebuild

I disagree with "best done". If this WCG project goes belly up, as it could have during the transition from IBM, then that money is gone forever whereas the equipment is still there and can be used for another Boinc project.

I'm sure there are plenty of people here with dedicated 24/7/365 rigs.

This is not to discourage donations as I did.

@Bobby B
If this WCG project goes belly up will people survive?

Re: PC Rebuild

I'm interpreting that to mean will people still have Boinc projects to participate in and not literally "will people survive" biggrin

There is Rosetta which now has stuff but is not constant. Tn-Grid and Denis have been dead for some time. This leaves Sidock. sidock.si says Slovenia but is really Moscow so I don't go there unless there is nothing anywhere. I only remember once this year and now their WUs are 2-4 hours instead of 24+.

There are others but I prefer things which are here and not 150+ light years away like Milkyway and I'll leave computing Pi to the umteen billionth digit for others to enjoy. Not being negative about others but they are not my priorities.

Re: PC Rebuild

Thanks for your feedback. I was specifically meaning WCG.

Re: PC Rebuild

CPU core count for what is currently running on WCG. If/when ARP goes live again (and if you only want to run ARP), then not core count, but single core speed instead would be more helpful. If you want to just run everything on WCG then I would lean strongly towards core count.

I don't think GPU work will ever be the predominant work on WCG.
