Re: New BOINC version: 8.0.2

No I had not thought about that. So they would just drop a recent previous version? That also does not inspire confidence to update.

I wonder how many people have 8.0 vs 7.nn.n?

Re: New BOINC version: 8.0.2

I am running 8.0.2 on my Linux Mint 20.3 machines. Since I used the PPA the update came through the Update Manager. Runs fine by me.

Re: New BOINC version: 8.0.2

I'm using Boinc Manager version 8.1.0 from Gian Franco's FireFox Backports repo: https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/ubuntu/firefox
I'm on Linux Mint 21.3 (based on Ubuntu 22.04). So far 8.1 seems to be working OK. I'm also running Efmer's BoincTasks-js 2.4.4 which also seems to work well with Boinc 8.1.0 and is great for monitoring a couple of PCs. I did have to change the file protection on gui_rpc_auth.cfg to 644 in /var/lib/boinc as Boinc would give an error message it couldn't read it.

Re: New BOINC version: 8.0.2

Should I update or should I not? The answer to updates is always the same. Do I have an issue which this update will solve? Do I get better performance and how much? Do I have a backup plan?

All this from the point of view of machines which only Boinc and nothing else.

Of course it's different for a machine which is also used on a daily basis. I would not think of NOT keeping my OS and AV up-to-date. But do the rest of the programs like OpenOffice need to be updated always?

I had to go back to 7.18.1 from 7.24.1 to solve a problem. Would not have wasted all the time it took to figure this out if I had stuck with my first statement above. I did not have a backup plan.
