Last night I noticed this message in the BOINC Manager:
Sun 02 Jun 2024 00:03:28 | | A new version of BOINC is available (8.0.2). Download My package manager doesn't offer it yet, so I'll just be awaiting the new release. The release notes can be found on Github: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/wiki/Client-release-notes Adri PS At the moment I'm running the (latest offered) Pre-release version 7.20.2 on Fedora Linux 39 and 40. |

I'm reading the release notes and found nothing which would entice me to update.
![]() I'm looking for: fix broken 7.24.1 implementation of CPU throttling. I also notice there is no native Linux option. You need to install Virtual Box then run the Windows version in it or is it vice-versa. Either way you need a licence for Windows. So are they telling me to use a pirated Windows? It's the reason I decided to use Linux for my 3 machine setup. No software costs. BTW, I know ho to set up a pirated Windows. ![]() |

My Linux Mint laptop updated me a couple of days back, no noticeable difference - it just works :-)
I’m guessing my two Ubuntu desktops will be ready to update when I get back to the UK. |

BobbyB,
----------------------------------------I'm looking for: fix broken 7.24.1 implementation of CPU throttling. I think you'll find that all the developer effort has been concentrated on 8.0.x for a while now, so I'm unsure that they would fix something in 7.24.1 for which there's a work-around, especially as it didn't appear to affect all platform variants...Obviously, the new version needs testing on systems that showed (or didn't show!) the symptom on version 7.24.1 -- I've been a bit busy doing other stuff so I'd temporarily locked my BOINC to version 7.24.1 -- I'll give 8.0.x a try some time soon (provided I can find a path back to 7.24 if the wheels fall off!) and see if it shows the problem to which you are referring on any of my existing 7.24 systems (as mentioned in my post in your thread on the topic ...) Cheers - Al. [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Jun 2, 2024 4:56:56 PM] |

The BOINC Development group is maintaining their own repositories for Ubuntu and Fedora. Install instructions can be found here:
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/wiki/Linux-DEB-and-RPM-support I've been running 8.0.1 for about a month now and it seems to be working reasonably well. Just upgraded to 8.0.2 on 2 systems and it seems to work OK also. NOTE: there is one issue I reported concerning the use of boinccmd. It fails on my Fedora systems because it can't find gui_rpc_auth.cfg. I suspect this is due to the /etc/boinc-client file is empty. That file used to contain a variable that pointed to the BOINC data directory. I first noticed it in 8.0.1 but it persists in 8.0.2 even after Vitahli said he would fix it in conjunction with another issue. Version 8.0 contains support for Sporadic Apps |

Bryn Mawr. Where do you see an update version? 7.22.1 is the only one that works flawlessly for me on mint. Software manager doesn't list any update, latest is 7.22.1
----------------------------------------To all- As a side note, have not found any description of what's included in the new version, where is that located, didn't see it on github. For mint, only the version there was able to work for me. If there isn't a significant update or security issue, I may just stay as it works and I have no known issues. Maybe for you and me but not really a workaround. On the Berkeley site the problem is exactly the opposite. It fails to suspend. Whatever logic which is being used is defective.Suspend not working properly |

I imagine that the source was Gianfranco’s PPA When I used that PPA I was presented with 7.24.1 but mine is Xubuntu (or really Debian) if that makes a difference. |

BobbyB -- for information,
Gianfranco's repository has only recently started offering 8.0.2 to Ubuntu versions earlier than Noble (24.04) -- that's why I suddenly found myself having to block the updates until I could do some proper testing :-) Cheers - Al. P.S. I hope you realized that when I commented earlier about likelihood of fixes to 7.24.1 I wasn't suggesting they should ignore it, just that they probably won't fix it there |
