Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

Client on my fastest computer will not start. After the apparent mass outage over the weekend I decided that this could be the cause -- the client trying to talk to the servers to handshake or whatever. The site seems to be up right now but the client on this machine still goes into a permanent "connecting to localhost" state and stays there. Over the weekend it would get to that point and after a long time the client would pop up a message about "I've failed to connect three times in the past x minutes -- do you want to keep trying." Like I wrote this machine is many times faster than any of the others so I'd like to get it going. Any ideas about fixing or at least troubleshooting the problem?

Re: Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

Not sure what you are running there.
I just turned on two of my computers that have been powered off for about the last week and they came up and downloaded about a dozen WU's (12 cores). Running Win11 Home, BOINC ver. 7.24.1 (x64). I do not use a separate account manager.
Are you running an Account Manager or just BOINC?
When was the last time your system successfully connected to WCG?
You might want to copy/paste a portion of the log that shows the connection attempts in case others may be able to spot the issue.

Re: Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

Which file is this log? I can find only one file among Program Data which claims to be a log ie. job_log... but there seems to be nothing identifiable in it. Is stderrdae.txt be the one you are referring to? It at least shows huge numbers of errors leading back to 21-Oct-2023 which is when this problem cropped up. The file contains many iterations of the form:

24-Oct-2023 10:12:35 gstate.init() failed
Error Code: -180
24-Oct-2023 10:13:35 gstate.init() failed
Error Code: -180
24-Oct-2023 10:14:36 gstate.init() failed
Error Code: -180
24-Oct-2023 10:15:41 gstate.init() failed
Error Code: -180
24-Oct-2023 10:16:42 gstate.init() failed
Error Code: -180
24-Oct-2023 10:17:42 gstate.init() failed
Error Code: -180

The LOG file I was referring to is accessible from:
Boinc Manager -> Tools -> Event Log.

Options for what is displayed in that Event Log file is selected from:
Boinc Manager -> Options -> Event Log Options.

(I only run the windows version of BOINC so, I am basing my comments on that knowledge.)

Re: Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

Running "C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC\boincmgr.exe" and tools > event log shows nothing at all. This might mean nothing happened or that the client didn't manage to start successfully so can't report anything. Right now I'm considering simply zapping the whole shebang from the computer and then re-installing it from scratch. That is starting to look like the simplest thing. This whole project's structure seems entirely too fragile...

Re: Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

If possible, before you do that,
BOINC Manager -> Projects -> highlight WCG -> select RESET PROJECT
(That should keep your device ID the same.)
you never indicated which version you were running. check here to display
BIONC Manager -> Help -> About BOINC Manager

current versions available at: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Re: Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

The other possibility is that the lock file was not deleted when you last closed down.

Look for a file 5 bytes long and called Boinc-xxxxx in your root directory and delete it if found.

Re: Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

This machine is running 7.14.2(x86). I've been searching for that 5-byte lock file and search is still running since I don't know which root it is supposed to be in. System root? as inc C:\ ? Anyway I've searched for Boinc- and sorted by size. One problem is that this client doesn't know what project it is meant to be running -- WCG does not show up in projects so I can't query anything in that direction or do a reset.

Re: Client Refuses To Start After Outage Weekend

The Windows equivalent would be C:/ but I never use Windows.
