Evening All
I have just started running the Windows/BOINC/WCG setup on one of my office PCs for test purposes before I deploy it across my network. The PC has returned a couple of results, however, the 'My Grid' section of the WGC website and the BOINC Manager are not showing any points. (The BOINC manager is showing they have been returned OK) I'm wondering where i should look to see whether the work units have been sucessfully completed and points added Thanks |

We are in an awkward hybrid mode at the moment. The BOINC platform does not award points immediately the way the UD platform on Windows does. Instead it holds the results for validation. Once at least 4 identical results are returned for that work unit, they are validated. Each result was returned with a provisional point score. The lowest and highest scores are dropped and the remaining scores are averaged. Then the average number of BOINC points is awarded to everybody who returned a valid result. Then the BOINC points are multiplied by a conversion factor to convert them into WCG points (trying to reconcile BOINC scores with our original UD scores) and show up on your statistics.
Will a BOINC expert explain how to check on returned results awaiting validation? |

Well, we usually check them on the result page: http://ProjectURL/results.php?userid=UserID
Frankly, the more BOINC web pages that you can make them availble the better. |

Thanks mycrofth
----------------------------------------Fortunately I like my sport, so that points scoring method makes sense. (Ski-jumping springs to mind ) Just a couple of questions, if I may. Can I assume that the individual work units are sent out at around the same time ? Are the BOINC stats processed 4 times a day like the regular WCG work units ? As I have heavily customised the BOINC msi installation so that just the service is installed on my workstations (with my server having the BOINC Manager on it) I wanted to make sure I hadn't made a mess of things. I'll give it a couple of days to see what shows up in my stats [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 17, 2005 6:14:10 AM] |

Hello Slug,
Can I assume that the individual work units are sent out at around the same time ? Yes, but sometimes it will be necessary to send out makeup units to get a valid quorum of 4, so a later workunit might be awarded points first. Are the BOINC stats processed 4 times a day like the regular WCG work units ? Yes, we process all our statistics 4 times a day. |

I just checked on your results. You had one result experience a client error and one result return successfully. The one that returned successfully is part of a workunit that has two results returned for it so far. It needs 4 results in order to attempt validation. The two other results are in process at this time.

Thanks for checking knreed.
I'm pretty sure that the failed unit was caused by the PC running the standard UD agent at the same time. I'd forgot to turn it off before installing the BOINC client. Fortunately the BOINC Manager did point out the failure and I guessed what the problem was. That one sucessfully completed unit returned has pretty much confirmed that. On a slightly different matter, I've been testing a couple of deployment packages for my office network today and I've noticed that there are now duplicate devices in 'My Grid'. I take it that this is suposed to happen as it does with the standard UD agent? |

Definition from Cynic's Compendium: 'Merge Devices' - A function that shall be implemented at some undetermined time in the future. Not to be confused with 'Real Soon Now'. See also: manana.

Thanks for the definition mycrofth.
----------------------------------------Checked with Amazon, but they didn't have a copy. Probably on the same shelf as the Microsoft Thesaurus: noun: bug synonym: feature Guess I'll have to ask Santa. (Just wanted to check as the BOINC client is new - I'd love to have the 84 devices that are allocated to me rather than my actual 14. Somewhat defeats the point of keeping a total number of devices count.) Just thought of something. Do you know what file or files I need to keep on a device so that a new one isn't created? (They can then be shoved in the msi for each machine) [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 17, 2005 8:20:11 PM] |

You just need the basic install files and your account_worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file.
With this you can install BOINC onto a new system, copy the account_worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file into the BOINC directory. As soon as you launch BOINC it will automatically contact the server and register itself as a new device. Let us know if you have any troubles with this. Kevin |
