Are mainframe used to run WGC's research calculation?

Hi, I see a lot of references to mainframes but when I look at the threads, there does not seam to be any evidences that mainframes are used to run WGC's research calculations.

Are they ?

I was involved in something along that line a few years back. I am checking if there was any progress or not.

Where are you seeing references to mainframes?

As far as I know WCG is totally server based.

I don't think mainframes were used at WCG even when IBM ran it.

One user who had access to a large IBM mainframe ran BOINC using a x86 emulator.

Some projects where the source is available could be run natively on mainframes or other platforms.

Yes, I remember him we were all envious of his crunching abiliity, and he certainly soon raced to the top of the charts with the huge resuorces he had available - hoovering up vast quantities of WU's.

The thing about mainframes, is that they're not cheep to run/maintain (similar to large racks of high-end servers) - and usually are used in large institutions who've got a purpose to run those said machines (such as banks etc.). I know at the bank I work at, we've got a few mainframes, spread over a number of data centres, and whilst the "primary"/"production" site is bieng used to 'run the bank', the "backup"/"secondary" mainframes are used for the development/test systems - thus, they're also heavily used, despite them "not" being used to 'run the bank" on a day to day basis.

There was one that ran in between tasks as a fill-in.

Re: Are mainframe used to run WGC's research calculation?

So can I conclude that currently there are no mainframes at all used for any WCG projects?

I would say so - that is, unless you've got a spare IBM Z16 kicking around biggrin

I have an old 1401 in the basement to heat the house in winter. biggrin

But seriously, I wonder if there was ever a study done to evaluate how many mainframes, Z16 or other, it would take to achieve the computing power of the WCG community.
