Laptop computer shuts down every evening

Hi. I have been part of this community for many years running Windows 10 on an HP Laptop, About 6 weeks ago, my laptop began to shut down completely while running only the downloaded WCG tasks. The Windows event viewer simply says that the computer shut down.

This would happen at various times during the night after I had stopped doing anything on the computer: 10 pm, 2 am, 5 am, etc. The computer never shut down while I was using the computer. I would awake to find the computer powered down.

There is a known issue with this laptop over-heating, I have a cooling pad fan underneath it at all times. Could the WCG tasks be overheating my computer?

Thanks for any help or ideas. I disabled WCG and had have no shut down problems lately.

Re: Laptop computer shuts down every evening

Overheating sounds like it is the problem. You may have dust on the interior someplace like a heat sink or on the fan blades. If possible, some kind of cleaning is probably necessary. I don't have any experience with cleaning laptops so you may want to check on the internet for tips on how to do it safely.
The other thing you could try in the meantime is to limit the number of active threads running and perhaps find a level where the overheating does not occur.
Cheers

Re: Laptop computer shuts down every evening

I run BOINC on a Windows 10 desktop with the dust blown off the fans and radiator. The CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 which has a maximum temperature of 95 deg C. I consider this too high, so I use EFMer Tthrottle and set my maximum temperature to 79 deg C. When the temperature exceeds 79, Tthrottle reduces the CPU cycles to the BOINC work units. At the moment the room temperature is 25 deg C, the CPU is 79 and Tthrottle has reduced the maximum CPU percentage to 84%.

You can visually inspect the laptop. Turn it off then turn it upside down. Look at the venting slots and check if there is dust on the fan. Just blow into it. If dust comes out it needs to be dusted. I use a compressor with a connection to inflate a football on the end.

They sell canned compressed air.

Hwinfo has some kind of logging to a file. I have never used it though.

Re: Laptop computer shuts down every evening

Thank all of you for the suggestions. I'll look into the EFMer Throtte. I'll like to get back to the Grid. I'm surprise that none of my other applications seem to cause any overheating. I do a lot of work every day with images and am always cropping, renaming, uploading and downloading. I'll also install a temperature monitoring app and see what actually happens at night. Thanks, again.

Re: Laptop computer shuts down every evening

I have several of the stackable, plastic desk trays set right-side-up and have placed my laptop on the top tray. The air space underneath seems to help. Even a single tray is enough. I run WCG on my laptop 24/7 - 2 processes and 1 GPU when available.

I also use a wireless keyboard and mouse so the height of the laptop for me is a non-issue.

Further, as BobbyB mention above, I also check the vents on the side and bottom of the laptop - if there appears ANY dust, I grab my can of compressed air and proceed to blow it out.

Happy Crunching!

This is no effort for a CPU. And remember, BOINC suspends when you are working.

Right click the task bar then click Task Manager and you will see how busy your CPU is. When BOINC is working the graph is maxed out. To keep that graph always there on the taskbar you need to go to options and select Hide When Minimised and in the taskbar settings you tell it to always show Task Manager
