Thread: WCD takes 99% of CPU - Surely this is wrong |

I am currently trying to work and WCD is causing my application to stall. The reason appears to be that WCD is taking 100% of the CPU. Surely this is not correct. I understood the application will only run when my machine is not doing anything else.
I cannot see any settings in WCD to influence the priority. I am looking to see if I can set it in Windows. |

The WCG application WCGrid_Rosetta.exe runs at lowest priority. Task Manager should show 100% utilization since it runs instead of the CPU Idle process whenever there is no other task running. You can always right-click on the World Community Grid icon and choose SNOOZE or EXIT.
What program is it interfering with? |

Hey GB, If your CPU is hyperthreading, and you are also trying to run a processor intensive application, Windows XP has a habbit of not fully releasing the proceessor to it. Unless the app you are trying to run is coded for HT, I would recommend going in to your BIOS setup and disabling HT on your system. This will get you around the problem with Windows not giving up the CPU from the agent, and you will probably notice a bit better performance from other software you are running.
----------------------------------------I did some testing with the U.D. software when someone at Grid.org was having a problem like yours. WCG uses the same software. Hope this helps. |

As mycrofth indicates, WCG software runs at the lowest priority possible and so I do not think the priority has anything to do with your problem. Further I have never seen any evidence that HT would have anything to do with it.
----------------------------------------If you stop WCG as using Snooze or Exit as mycrofth suggests, what happens? Do the other processes return to normal speed? If so, does this happen immediately or does it take a few seconds? How much memory does your system have? Does this all start when you first start WCG while another app is running? If so, how long after you start the WCG? Have you run any anti-spyware recently? |

Yes, this is correct. 90%+ of the time, your CPU is not actually doing anything. The application runs at the lowest priority on the system, so it will only run when there is nothing else left to run on the system. Thus it's running when the CPU would not otherwise be doing anything useful. There are several options at your disposal to control when the Agent runs:
