I'm running BOINC 7.22.2 (x64) on Windows 11.
BOINC runs fine and processes heavily when BOINC mgr has focus (on top), but if it start working on another window on top, or if I minimize it, the processing goes down quite a bit. I can see this because I'm using TThrottle with max temp set to 150 degrees... runs right about there for all CPUs when BOINC Mgr has focus; but when not in focus it drops down to 100-120 degrees on all CPUs. I'm wondering how can I make it run "full power" even when not the focus window or if minimized? My older PC doesn't have this problem. Both have Power Mode set to High Performance. I tried disabling POWERTHROTTLING but that didn't help. I reviewed the High Performance attributes - all look fine/appropriate. In the Computing Preferences, I have set for plenty of activity, and I don't have any of the "Suspend" rules checked. In Boinc Manager --> Activity it's set to "Run Always" for CPU and GPU. I think I'm missing some other Windows setting, or perhaps this version of BOINC (which I think is Beta?) has this characteristic for some reason. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. :-) |

I'm running BOINC 7.22.2 (x64) on Windows 11. Under options, "Computing preferences", check your settings under "When to suspend". But I am not sure you wan to mess too much with it, the BOINC clients seem to be doing what by default they are supposed to dp If you set the BOINC usage too high, the system can very quickly become unresponsive for anything else you a retrying to do on your computer....BOINC runs fine and processes heavily when BOINC mgr has focus (on top), but if it start working on another window on top, or if I minimize it, the processing goes down quite a bit. The only 2 machines I have which run Boinc on Windows 10 don't even have BoincMgr running. It just runs the client when it boots. They are older laptops which have been replaced with new stuff. If I do open it an that laptop I do File/Exit Boinc Manager.
----------------------------------------They run Version 7.20.2. I don't like betas I control all 5 machines from another laptop using BoincMgr which does not even run the client. Open Task Manager and check the CPU usage after exiting BoincMgr [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at Aug 12, 2023 12:07:30 AM] |

Jeff, any chance your system has an Intel 12th/13th gen CPU? I've noticed the hybrid architecture seems to confuse the (OS) scheduler badly, at least in Windows 10, and will only run BOINC tasks on the E-cores when BOINC is minimised. I hear Windows 11's schedule is supposed to be improved, but that *might* still contribute to it.
----------------------------------------I've solved this with Process Lasso, which lets it distribute the tasks across all cores. If you've got a 12th/13th gen CPU, I'll share my settings which help. ![]() |

Yes, my CPU is 12th generation:
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700 2.10 GHz I have my system set to use 75% of the cores, so I see 12 threads running at a time. I can have a window in front (like this browser) that is almost full-screen and BOINC rund fine, but if I maximize my browser the performance drops within a few seconds. ????? Seems like some kind of Windows dropping perf is not the focus window. (Even tho I have nothing else significant running at the time!) Thanks. |

Have you tried exiting Boincmgr. You don't need Boincmgr for the computer to run WUs

Interesting... I had re-started Boinc & Boinc Mgr... tried re-booting... still had the problem.
But based on your recommendation... (Since basically I always run Boinc Mgr since I started doing WCG many years ago...) I exited B Mgr and told it to NOT stop the tasks... it continued to run fine, full-perf! Then I re-started B Mgr and then minimized it.... still ran fine! Then I had B Mgr in a window and put a maximized, full-screen window on top of it, surprisingly still ran fine! For some reason, after stopping B Mgr and leaving the tasks running once, now I cannot reproduce the issue! Hmmmm. Very strange. Well, sorry, and THANK YOU all for your help! :-) |

why i cant get any new Wus, anyone know? Pls help. I don’t think there are any WUs available, except for a few resends. See this post maintained by Unixchick, one of the crunchers here. |
