This issue belongs in the Suggestions/Feedback forum and there is a thread already in that forum dealing with it. The response by knreed, one of the World Community Grid technicians, indicates why they are not presently supported and indicates that they are on the list of several user requested changes. I am sure you will agree that the recent roll-out of Linux support and gearing up for the release of the new HIV/AIDS project next week are of much higher priority than avatars.

Yes, I do agree with you. Present LINUX support and new projects are far more important issues.
