2023 BOINC Workshop - Day 01 - Igor Jurisica

Back in March there was a 2-day BOINC Workshop. Dr. Igor Jurisica, PhD, DrSc, of Krembil Research Institute was one of the Presenters and discussed the World Community Grid.

This Seminar occurred during the first day of the March Hardware/Storage failure event, which sadly may have overshadowed the news received here about that presentation.

I don't recall seeing this listed previously (or perhaps I missed) and thought I'd post someplace where others might enjoy (28:08 mins) --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha9QU8DwKu0

* There were some interesting slides in there, especially the diagram of New Device Additions which have been problematic in the past and the Team's work to resolve.

* Charts on Linux vs Windows, and CPU vs GPU (along with an interesting sidenote that they see many more errors from Win10 boxes, which piqued my interest since I run a 50/50 mix).

* WCG's future-state infrastructure plans.

* Longterm goals, including an upgrade to the BOINC System.

--

All-in-all it was extremely interesting and answered some questions I see repeatedly posted.

Hope someone enjoys as much as I did viewing...

Spiderman Do you see a difference in errors with Windows 10?

Re: 2023 BOINC Workshop - Day 01 - Igor Jurisica

sptrog1 , that's a good question!

I hadn't looked at my Results in a couple weeks, but pulled them today -- out of 2,327 records only (3) were in Error and they were due to "Server Aborted" where WCG's systems cancelled the Task after a late Wingman returned WU Results. They were Windows machines.

I went back a month and looked and had (2) true "Error" records -- those were on a Linux Mint system I'm testing (I generally run Debian for the quick Security Updates).

I poked-around some more in even older Result spreadsheets but didn't find that Win10 vs # of Error correlation here, but since I hadn't been closely monitoring, I can't say with any certainty.

That video was extremely interesting to me and the facts given during the presentation satisfied some of my questions.

I appreciate the shout -- if you notice anything abnormal in your observations of Errors on your systems, please let me know and I will track that here more closely to see if we correlate.

Thanks...

If I can interject here, I only run Windows (7 & 10) and android and have not had any errors in my current Results Status listings.

Re: 2023 BOINC Workshop - Day 01 - Igor Jurisica

Well, kind of interesting (and not)...

As for "errors", I do have errors on Windows 10 hosts, but then I also have errors on Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2003) which are currently running, with some of those, where I actually have to abort the WU, specially on MCM1, because they will never finish and just taking up slots. But this morning, I had this also with a couple of SCC1 WUs, and both on Windows 10 and Windows 7. The Windows 7 runs a somewhat older BOINC client, which was mentioned in the past that this could be a potential source for these problems, but the Windows 10 host where I had those "runaway" WUs was just installed a couple of weeks ago and runs the latest WCG BOINC client. I will tonight update both of those to the latest client from the BOINC site (which I have running on a handful of other hosts, but for all I can tell, with the same kind of random errors), but doubt that this will make a significant difference...

But then a problem that wasn't mentioned in the presentation at all was the communication back to their volunteers, the support email seems to be down for pretty much half a year now, and even the new "information contact" at WCG towers is a rather rare guest here on the forum as well... sad

My Windows 7 running BOINC version 7.14.2 has been rock solid. I don't even know when was the last time I had an error on that machine.
Cheers.

Well, updated a Windows 7 host that had occasional never ending WUs and after the update, all the remaining SCC1 WUs (about 8 or 9) all failed immediately with computation error, the same for subsequent MCM1 errors. Never happened like this before. Can't play with it more, as it is in use during work day, it's our current (remote)meeting room computer, will try to check tonight...
