Looks like It's still in beta. I'm staying on the 7.16 branch for Windows clients, which uses the built-in ca-bundle.crt instead of relying on Windows, which gave me nothing but problems.

I'm staying exactly where I am. +1I'm from the "If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It" brigade. I'm on version 7.16.20, on one computer, and way older versions on my other computers. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Grumpy Swede at Jun 4, 2023 6:11:58 PM] |

Using O/S-bundled certificates ought to be the optimum solution (provided one does the relevant updates!), but it appears that may not always be the case :-) [Windows vs. Linux showing up here?] As far as I'm concerned, if the O/S can't get the certificates right, it's not the applications (such as BOINC) that are broken :-) And given the number of cases I've seen in various forums on various projects (not just WCG) where users needed to be told how to replace the certificate bundle in an older BOINC client when it became outdated, some sort of update without user action would appear to be beneficial :-) -- that probably means using the O/S certificate bundle!
----------------------------------------Sometimes there can be compelling reasons for taking an upgrade, such as the excessive, repeated, fetching of work if the user employed a max_concurrent option in app_config.xml... That was still broken quite recently, and appears to have been fixed during the life of version 7.20[1]. As I run other projects alongside WCG I needed that to be fixed so I currently use 7.20.5. (All my systems run Linux at present...) Of course, users who only access WCG (and other projects that allow user-configured server-side constraints on downloads, if there are any?) might not notice that issue, so for them "it ain't broke" :-) All that said, I won't be trying 7.22 for a while as it doesn't seem to provide enough extra value yet... Cheers - Al. [1] I think there was a claim that the excess fetch problem was fixed in an earlier version on the Windows side, but I'm not convinced the successful fix was in a pre-7.20 version for Windows either... I run 7.22.1 on Linux (Pop!_OS) and just installed 7.22.2 on Windows 11 Pro. I'm from the "if it isn't broken, I'm not trying" school.

FYI -- On May 24th, they released an update (now v7.22.2) for Windows to fix a screensaver issue (I don't use the Screensaver so never noticed).
I read the above comments and wish everyone the best, but absolutely have no qualms for trying-out new software (I/S Mgr 40+ years -- been burnt several times in WinNT times (probably before most folks' birth), but if you're not willing to test for the Volunteers that write this, how are they to advance the client??? I'm serious!). If it messes-up a few WU submissions, I won't cry. I now have 4 (5?) Windows systems running this v7.22.2 release and it has been GREAT! I seen it pickup an Intel GPU that my Linux boxes formerly wouldn't touch. There's no Linux release yet, sadly. Try it out! They need feedback -- I've not had any to give them because it's worked flawlessly... |
