Hello, I have got into distributed computing fairly recently and I would like to give some of my processing power to WCG since it is one of the only directly-helpful projects going right now. I have Boinc set up and have been crunching for other projects for a couple of days. My question is that I never seem to get any WCG tasks unless I un-link the project and re-link it, which causes me to get 1-3 tasks. Otherwise I have never loaded one.
----------------------------------------Do I need to be using the version of Boinc that is packaged for WCG? Will that impact my ability to crunch for other projects? If not, I request assistance in troubleshooting what is going on. EDIT: I do note that my username is not my boinc ID. Maybe this project has somehow mis-identified me so my website profile is not linked to my crunching profile? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by jhook@duck.com at May 3, 2023 7:45:48 PM] |

I use the latest boinc version from the boinc site. I don't know what is packaged with the project, but it shouldn't matter.
There aren't many Work Units going out right now. Go to your devices page and make sure you have the settings chosen to do the projects of WCG you want and how many to keep of each kind in a queue. It is hard to know if there is a problem on your end right now, since there is a lack of Work Units on WCGs end. Hopefully that will get fixed soon. |

I don't have anything recognized under the devices page, but in the project page I have everything selected. It's difficult for me to discern what is a known bug and what is just a me thing, since not having your results page update is apparently a well-known problem.
----------------------------------------Thank you for your reply though. It seems like every project that has a direct measurable goal is on hiatus right now. GPUGRID and Rosetta are both not sending anything either. You can see I managed to get one GPUGRID task before they ran out. Thank you for your assistance. I suppose I will keep my computer crunching more theoretical things for now. ![]() |

Right now WCG is dry.

Thank you for letting me klnow. the lack of a traditional "server status" screen with tasks remaining is a bit offputting.
----------------------------------------I don't know if it is appropriate to ask this here, since it may be seen as "helping the competition", but are there any active projects anybody knows of that may have a direct measurable impact on people's quality of life? I'm a huge aerospace fan, so the astronomy stuff is really cool to me, but I would really prefer to be crunching something more relevant. I can't bring myself to load up the pure mathematical projects, even though they give tons of credit, because they feel way more "cool science project" than "actually helpful". ![]() |

Einstein is doing a cool astronomy project. Hopefully others will post of biology projects. The beauty of boinc is that you can set a backup project (0%) to your main project (100%), and boinc will automatically switch from dry projects to backups, and back again when there is more data to process. I'll see if I can find the list of boinc projects and post the link here.

Thank you for letting me klnow. the lack of a traditional "server status" screen with tasks remaining is a bit offputting. Well, a "traditional" server status page (which, also only works when the web server itself is up and running, and that seems at times to be a challenge recently) doesn't easily work for WCG, due to the way the different subprojects are being run.It could "possibly" look like the server status page at Einstein@Home, but then this wasn't even on the radar during IBM's days, and right now, I think any time and energy for an effort to get a page like that put together are at the current time better used to fix the current problems...Ralf |

I don't see anything special about the subprojects, that are simply different applications, most other BOINC projects have that and the standard BOINC server status page has been able to display the per app availability of tasks since many years now, like for example on Milkyway or Rosetta or Universe or whatever else, just scroll down to "Tasks by application".Einstein has extended this a bit with additional per app information, but no one is asking here for that and that's not necessary if someone just wants to know if tasks are available for their selected applications. Moo! has also a bit different way to display the info, since they have different sizes of tasks for the same application, but that's also not necessary here. ![]() |

----------------------------------------Right now WCG is dry. Cheers Sort of, indeed. Sporadically, tasks are distributed; they all seem to be the SCC1 kind at the moment and they were all created between 21:00 and 22:00 UTC on the 1st of May. The speed at which they are released is about 10,000 per two hours. I would say that a normal 'speed' would be much higher, something like 10,000 workunits per 15 minutes. Adri EDIT: New tasks (MCM1 and OPNG) are back! (12:30 UTC) [Edit 2 times, last edit by adriverhoef at May 4, 2023 12:35:47 PM] |
