Hey,
I learned of this project about 30 minutes ago...it resonatated with me and have had a reasonable browse through but might have some stupid questions... I work as IT in a factory that has recently decommed 6 servers that used to run it. 2 of them are gen 10 HPE xeon 6248s with 380~GB RAM each, and 4 gen9..i can't remember the xeon CPUs (E5 series) with 512gb each. I guess my question is whether this project is suitable for utilising these as well as consumer hardware? The main thing i'm limited on is bandwidth, as it'll take a few months to go through corporate to allow these to use our main WAN connection (if they even allow it)...at the moment i can do an IDSN line at around 1-2mbps. (with it being that slow, will that utilise what we have as much as it could?) |

If I understand you correctly you have a total of 60+ cores you can use! They could provide significant computing power to the projects here.
----------------------------------------I'm not a specialist but 1-2mbps should be ok from the data transfer perspective. More knowledgeable members could provide you maybe more details. Welcome! ![]() ![]() |

@cchurches
Be careful as using company resources (hardware and electricity) without permission, may open you to company disciplinary proceedings and put your employment at risk. |

It's too bad there are no provisions in tax laws to allow hardware and electricity, etc to be a tax deduction.

Welcome to WCG cchurches! Of course, that hardware would likely output more than many of the home users, especially if you run them 24/7. If they're going to be running in company datacenters on company electricity, that's a plus, since that would cost a small fortune in the electric bill, especially in UK (from what I gather).
----------------------------------------1-2 Mbps is perfectly adequate. The current WCG/University Health Network/ShareC datacenter in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is quite stretched thin, and I only get 5 Mbps or so on average. 1-2 Mbps will be fine for all projects. Africa Rainfall Project's uploads are 800-1000 MB per work unit, but even at 1-2 Mbps, as long as the WCG network is stable, it'll be fine. I second getting permission if you are going to run these in the company datacenter. Not worth losing your job. For what it's worth, all communication is encrypted and done over HTTPS, and the scientists and labs for all projects are legitimate, university and research institute-based.
