Students at Boca Raton Community High School have been contributing to the World Community Grid since 2020, and the partnership is expanding with the creation of the new WCG Club.

If anyone has any questions about our hardware, class, club, etc... I am happy to answer them!

Nice article! I was thrilled with the Students being actively engaged in WCG -- even down to fundraising and building their own hardware!
I assume this is part of their STEM Program -- great use of the Sciences, plus blending of Community Goodwill by helping Researchers help fellow man. I wasn't familiar with Baton Raton Community High, but read this Wiki-article which explained a lot --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boca_Raton_Community_High_School I hope this gets additional publicity in the Local + State School System and they use Baton Raton as the model for other Schools' STEM Program activities. Bravo!!! |

Bravo!!! We definitely wanted to provide all students an opportunity to contribute to the whole project. Some students are not interested in the technical side (understandably) and then some only care about the technical side (also understandable). A few of our systems are completely student-built and brought to life through donations of funds and parts. Some students worked to find companies that wanted to help and then some students worked to build these systems. Additionally, some students secured funding to purchase a few of our Threadripper Pro systems from approved vendors (not student built). Incorporating WCG into my class (which then influenced the formation of the club) was something I decided to try- it might become more widespread throughout curriculum/district but it is not at this point. Maybe sometime it will be! |

That's fantastic! Really cool to hear about what you're doing & how you're getting the students involved!

Thanks! We are really proud of the students- they worked really hard to build up our computing capabilities and they still have more they want to accomplish. If anyone out there wants to help these students build up this program, send me a message!

Are all devices contributing under the "Boca Raton Community HS" user account? Just curious how it's organized. Curious if the students also compare the WCG power of each device against the others.
----------------------------------------Edit: Also I'm really excited that distributed computing is used as a teaching tool in high schools. I started with distributed.net (Dnetc) when I was a high school freshman, just on my own, and moved onto United Devices-->Grid.org, which later turned into World Community Grid in 2004. I wish more people knew about distributed computing -- to this day, it's such a niche hobby for computer nerds -- yet anyone can contribute to it and make a dent in scientific research.

They should all be contributing. They do not all run on the weekends due to the AC being turned off within the school but generally speaking, they are all running. The two student-built systems are now running 24 hours a day after they demonstrated great stability (big "thank you" to be quiet! for helping with these systems!). If interested, here is a document that shows how the classroom and workstations are organized https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mQhBSIDn7...Bt98L1BQ/edit?usp=sharing. Basically, our students use the computers before/after school and during lunch for whatever academic purposes they want (can be creative work, design, scientific computing, coding, etc...) then when they are not directly being used by a student, they flip over to BOINC and WCG. Although WCG utilizes "all" of our CPU cores, we complete GPU work for Einstein@home (although we still complete the ever-elusive GPU tasks on the WCG). The last systems that students were able to raise funds for were the Threadripper Pro systems. In one of the pictures you can see in the WCG story, there is a student working on the whiteboard. Students conducted a cost/core/benefit analysis to decide which CPU would be ideal for distributed computing work. Now that we are up and running, we also do watch the CPU performance differences between the workstations (spoiler- the Threadripper Pro CPUs with 8 channels of memory are the fastest). Additionally, they watch the GPU performance on E@H work units. I agree- I wish more knew about it, but hopefully by incorporating it into my class and the school, more will know about it! |
