April OPN project update

In our previous OPN1 project update, the OPN team described plans to focus on the new SARS-COV2 target – Non-Structural Protein 1 (Nsp1), leading to new CPU/GPU batches of work units. Nsp1 is among the first viral proteins to be expressed after the infection of the host cell, where it affects normal protein expression and interferes with multiple steps of the immune response pathways.

With the help of WCG volunteers, approximately 4 million compounds from two diverse chemical libraries have been virtually screened and analyzed, leading to the selection of 20 candidate molecules. Currently, the team and their collaborators are gearing up to perform in vitro inhibition assays to validate these prioritized molecules. We hope to share more exciting results from this validation soon.

OPN1 work units are expected to be completely depleted within the next few days as the focus will remain on GPU processing. The OPN1 team is extremely grateful for the speed at which their research has been able to progress thanks to the efforts of our volunteers.

At present, we have over 12,500 batches of OPNG work units left to distribute. OPNG work is being generated periodically and snatched up as soon as it is available. We are aware very frequently only a limited number of OPNG work units are available. This is due to the fact that some OPNG batches that could not be automatically packaged due to missing results (presumably lost during the storage server crash). We are identifying and preparing the missing work units by manually running the script to build jobs.

If you have any comments or questions, please leave them in this thread for us to answer.

WCG team

Re: April OPN project update

Great news on the end of CPU tasks even if it's a temporary thing.

Re: April OPN project update

Regarding the focus on OPNG tasks - if this foreshadows a permanent end to CPU work, that will leave WCG with no current projects for ARM systems such as Raspberry Pi. (It would also mean no OPN work for lots of non-ARM systems, but at least they can run other WCG projects...)

Quite a while back, there was an MCM1 beta that included an ARM version[1], but nothing ever seemed to come of that, and I don't recall ever seeing an attempt to get AutoDock VINA working on ARM...

Whilst I realize that there are more urgent problems at present, I'm curious as to whether it is really the intention to cut off non-Android ARM systems in the longer term; Apple M1/M2 will also become a [bigger] problem at some point when Rosetta2 is no longer available, so at some stage an ARM build of WCG applications will be needed if that part of the user base is to be retained!

Cheers - Al

[1] Both the MCM1 and VINA applications seem to have memory access behaviour that is far more suited to ARM systems with no L3 cache than OPN1 ever was; during the aforementioned Beta test my Pi was completing MCM1 tasks faster than OPN1 tasks, and it was mostly down to there being far fewer L2 cache misses...

sad Re: April OPN project update

I agree with the comment about ARM projects. I have a number of Raspberry Pi computers, and they will be left idle. I realize they don't do a lot of number crunching, but I can leave them on 24/7 as they only draw 7 watts of power. The amount of work they do does add up over time.

It would be nice if some more of the WCG projects did support ARM.

Re: April OPN project update

Why is Rosetta 2 becoming unavailable? I have a mac mini and it is great. Doing 45k - 50k per day at 25w.

You will have better luck getting an answer by asking this question in the appropriate project forum

Eventually, Apple will do an O/S release that doesn't offer it any longer -- they did the same with the previous Rosetta version once the transition to Intel hardware was well under way and major software packages had got Intel versions...

I suspect you'll have plenty more time with Rosetta 2, especially if you don't do whichever O/S version upgrade removes it :-)

Cheers - Al.

P.S. I only mentioned it in my earlier post to point out that there are several sections of the potential user base that might be being cut off at some point...

@Cyclops

Well, how about availability of OPN1 tasks now? You wrote in the first post in this thread on Apr 21, that "OPN1 work units are expected to be completely depleted within the next few days as the focus will remain on GPU processing"

3 days later, and there's still plenty of OPN1 tasks, and they are easy to get.
