Hi
Given the pretty steady growth in membership over the last few months I was wondering........ Is there any practical reasoning why multifarious projects cannot be run concurrently??? If there were, say, 4 solid viable project candidates ready to go live....would they do so?.........Or is it going to be limited to say, 2 projects at any given time. Membership is growing at a decent rate, the loss of find a drug and the addition of the Linux client indicate that there is potential for a great many more new members. So, it seems to me that the wider a selection of available projects from which to choose the better........adds more appeal. Lately, the choice of viable projects options in the dc world overall seem rather limited.....with the loss of fad and the reliabilty of numerous others in question. It would be great to see a boinc like situation here where there are a good handful of projects to choose from all from a single central location. I am not technically minded and don't much think of the practicalities........so I would be grateful if you could enlighten me as to why it would not be a viable situation (if it isn't).........and offer a possible timeline if it is Guess I am just thinking out loud...........I want to see this project go from strength to strength and it would be great to know of a "long term" strategy. End of ramble |

Hello vaio,
We want to run multiple projects. BOINC is developing a framework that anybody can use to run a distributed computer project . . . IF they will build and operate a server farm with communication links and train personnel to operate and maintain the grid. We want to operate the grid, using whatever grid software seems most practical, freeing the project scientists to do science. At least, as long as the project meets our requirements and is approved by the Advisory Board. We want to concentrate on boarding project programs and operating the grid rather than on grid programming. We will soon be running AIDS. Rosetta@home is busy improving the part of the Rosetta program that we intend to use for HPF2, so we are not rushing to start it immediately. It might make more sense to concentrate on AIDS first. Meanwhile, we are continuing to work with some more probable projects such as Cancer. We are just beginning to learn the ins and outs of BOINC on Linux, which is why I am so uncharacteristically silent. [And even so, I ought to post less than I do while I am learning. ]mycrofth |

Hi
Thank you for the prompt response. I started trying out Rosetta@home this week and my exposure to it and the boinc interface was partly what prompted my thinking on this. I understand that in the scheme of things it is early days, I just like to push you guys to eke out lil tidbits of what may/ may not be in future plans. The Linux client and the new project are a good step forward.........just hoping this forward step is the first of many. |

I think they're getting ready. A lot of disk space was added only a few weeks ago to the server to add capacity for multiple projects. linux/boinc is just getting started on Rosetta shakedown, and can then be used for other things. The Aids part will start Nov 21. The Rosetta Phase II will start as soon as the data is ready. A cancer thingy may start early next year.
----------------------------------------Surely that's multifarious enough. More proposals might even be sent as our new Easynews members help us rip through what we've got and the reputation for quick crunching gets out to the researchers out there. I'm not actually a "scientist", but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
